Living/working abroad

It seems like there's a large number of AU fans living and working overseas.

Where are you guys living? and how did you come about your current situation etc etc?

Also any advice for the rest of us contemplating "a stint overseas to ply our trade" lol ?

Personally there has always been something pulling me towards spending some time in malta (family heritage but raised 100% australian) So living and working over there for a period of time really appeals to me.

So i suppose im really interested in everyones elses stories that have moved on for a period of time

There are indeed a few of us, and I dare say that we all managed to get their via a different route. For myself I love developing nations and hence fell quite comfortably into the Australia Volunteers International programme (then OSB) and went to the Pacific. It's been pretty much one developing nation after another ever since (though did use Tokyo as a base for a while - that was fun).

Good thread shin, I'm interested in the same thing. The matchday jamboree foreigners list seems to be growing all the time, I myself being a recent addition.

I live in Brazil in a small city called Santa Rita do Sapucaí. I teach english in the school that my mother owns and runs. She and my brother moved here after my brother added 2 new members to my family with his Brasilian partner. Love it here, I've taken up football (have never played it due to playing aussie rules all my life) and expect to be recruited any day now by AUFC. (after 5 games)

I studied in Montreal for a year when I was 19-20. Very awesome experience. It almost doesn't matter where you go I reckon, just taking yourself out of the comfort zone for a while can be a good thing - you've got to follow your instincts, if you're drawn to Malta & have family connections there, just do it I reckon! What line of work are you in? Do you speak the language at all?

I'm back to uni this year, doing a PhD which will involve field work living on an outer island of Vanuatu - probably during 2012 - which will be another experience & challenge..!

Sadly i bailed during my studies (was doing a bach of Visual art, i couldnt find anything thing i could be passionate about.

I work in the transport industry now ( no i am not a cabby LOL) So the only things that can help me find work overseas are my different driving qualifications although there is a world shortage for skilled drivers ..... trust me you dont want to be driving an oversized vehicle in a country you dont know.

Have found a few places i could find reliable work overseas, but to be frank id much rather be in some obscure viallage in the middle of nowhere teaching english then in a ski resort somewhere. I think that shows the kind of experiences im looking for ?

Although Malta is the main goal, just getting out there particularly in the developing countries and living it is just as appealing really.

There are some very good courses you can take in Adelaide for teaching English as a second language. Get that under your belt and teaching English as a way to travel becomes a real option.

I'm off to the Maldives in three months to help coach a football camp. Going to be an interesting experience, since it's such a strict Islamic region. No pork, alcohol or porn, apparently.
After that, back to Tokyo, where I'll probably end up with three or four jobs and one of them will probably be some more youth football coaching. And English tutoring, because the pay is ridiculous.

Turns out I'm on a really regional island called Velidhoo. I'm assuming the football camp is mainly being organised by the island's youth club, which happens to have THE GREATEST YOUTH CLUB WEBSITE EVER.
