AUFC AFC Club License

Postby blahblah Sun Jan 12, 2020 10:46 am

In order to attain an AFC Club License and hence compete in regional competitions, AUFC is required to have two underage teams between U18 & u15. Whilst we have the U18's via the FFSA, a lower age group is missing.

If AUFC created an U15's, there will be issues with FFSA NPL clubs as talent is pulled away and also a sharpening of the talent pool, reducing chances for children who develop later or who are simply "off the radar". This is not to benefit of football in the state at either participation nor development levels.

There are, however, alternatives.

One approach AUFC could take is to offer children who are currently outside of the established system a chance to play u15's. This could be done either socially, working with disadvantaged groups, or regionally, basing a team out of Adelaide and bussing them in (and other teams out) for FFSA competitions. The Riverland would be a good example of a region that would benefit from the latter approach, children in poverty an example of the former.

This would have the effect of broadening the state's talent pool whilst protecting the interests of NPL clubs, all the while meeting AFC Club Licensing criteria.

We want to play in Asia, but we also want to be a positive contributor to football in the state. We can do both.

Great idea. But where's the money coming from? What level of support staff would be required?

It's a good question and some of the costs, particularly administrative, will have to be borne by the club regardless of the scenario; an unavoidable cost of gaining an AFC License.

In regards to the social disadvantaged group: it would present a good chance for some of our senior players who are looking to coach post-playing career to earn their licence and gain experience coaching, probably alongside a part-time dedicated coach. This would form part of player professional development and welfare. This could be done in conjunction with an existing social support organisation who can assist individual player costs (such as FFSA player registration, uniforms and transport).

Regional would attain financial support from the region itself with regionally based coaches receiving technical and training support from AUFC. It leaves a legacy in the region and supports a more holistic development approach. There would no doubt need to be some cost-sharing regarding transport which would be the most costly part of such an exercise. Northern Demons provide an example of the logistics involved.

The net cost is partly dependent on the effect this has on the community's perception of AUFC and subsequently the number of extra people through the gate and sponsors on the shirt.

What are the chances that we would not be able to enter an AFC tournament because we are missing a youth team? It seems like rules of participation can be waved at will depending on who you are and your standing in the AFC.

With that said, does it need to be an U15 team or could we just have two U18 teams? An U18 team in Darwin would likely be quite cheap but offers a small chance of finding some genuinely gifted athlete who may have otherwise played SANFL/AFL.

I think its also important to define what the definition of a team is in this instance. If we sent a second squad to a yearly youth tournament in Indonesia would this count as a second team or does the squad need to be involved with a league that falls under the FIFA umbrella.

Yes, teams get disallowed on a regular basis for not meeting the licensing criteria. Just recently Hanoi FC were not allowed into the AFC Cup as their U-15's didn't play in the national u-15 tournament (all underage tournaments must be attended). This seems a bit harsh given Hanoi have a good u-15 team and had taken them to a training camp in China the same time the VFF u-15 tournament was held. They play in the u-15 league and all tournaments (bar one, apparently!).

As for the type of tournament, that comes down to what the FFA and FFSA put on. I dare say it would mean the FFSA (or FFNT if based in Darwin) underage league. As for the number of teams at the same age bracket......no idea. Normally I would assume not though having a team in the NT playing in the senior competition may be something the AFC would consider.
