Qatar 2022 Qualifiers - AFC

Postby blahblah Wed Apr 17, 2019 1:28 pm

The first round draw for the AFC has just taken place for games to be played on the 6th & 11th of June. The sides who win join the rest of the AFC in the second round group stage.

Mongolia v Brunei - I'm going for Mongolia on this one given their recent performances, though Brunei do have the advantage of almost their entire side playing in the S-League as a club.
Macau v Sri Lanka - tougher one to pick but I think Sri lanka will prevail
Laos v Bangladesh - Laos should be too good
Malaysia v Timor-Leste - somewhat surprised that Malaysia are this far down the AFC rankings; an easy win for the Tigers
Cambodia v Pakistan - Cambodia to progress
Bhutan v Guam - should be Guam if they can get their US based players back.

It seems we at least now know how many teams will qualify with the failure of the somewhat ambitious, verging on naive, attempt to expand the tournament to 48 teams.

There are still question marks over Pakistan's ability to field a side given the governance stoush has yet to be resolved (the AFC recognised President has no players nor in-country legal capacity and the one who does, recognised by the Pakistani courts, isn't recognised by the AFC so may not be able to field a team in Cambodia).

I think the Cambodians would rather face the Pakistani's than not as they are the stronger of the two sides and would welcome competitive hit out, especially the away game, before the next phase.

It looks like the Pakistan game will go ahead, but due to the confusion as to who is in charge, their home game against Cambodia will be played in Doha. The Cambodians will be thrilled with that.

FIFA's fact finding mission met with the different Pakistani administrators on Tuesday and another meeting with the administrators and the Pakistan Olympic Committee was held yesterday. The findings of the mission should be released today or tomorrow. 'Fresh elections' is looking the most likely outcome.

Well, ii has kicked off in Asia with the 1st leg of the First Round almost completed.

Mongolia v Brunei: 2-0
Macau v Sri Lanka: 1-0
Laos v Bangladesh: 0-1 - great result for Bangladesh
Cambodia v Pakistan: 2-0 - Honda will be happy though the reporters have been waxing lyrical describing Honda as bringing an attacking mentality - the Angkor Warriors have always had an attacking mentality; they can't defend! Hence the clean sheet probably means more than the two goals.
Bhutan v Guam : 1-0
Malaysia v Timor Leste - playing today.

The return legs are on the 11th of June.

Malaysia pumped Timor Leste 7-1. I am still somewhat amazed that Malaysia are in the first round.

Some interesting bits coming out of the first round.

The coach for Timor Leste explained that he couldn't use his first choice 25 players because once the season had finished all they did was eat, drink whiskey and beer and lie around, meaning none of them were fit enough to play. Hence the Japanese coach had to reach into the youth ranks to fill the squad.

The Macau FA have decided they won't go to Sri Lanka over security concerns, even though they hold a 1-0 lead going into the away leg. The players are furious, with many signing a document vowing they will never play for Macau again to never (at least while the current FA is in place).

Draw for Round 2 is on today.

Pot 1: Iran, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, China

Pot 2: Iraq, Uzbekistan, Syria, Oman, Lebanon, Kyrgyzstan , Vietnam, Jordan

Pot 3: Palestine, India, Bahrain, Thailand, Tajikistan, North Korea, Phiippines, Taiwan,

Pot 4: Turkmenistan, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Yemen, Afghanistan, Maldives, Kuwait

Pot 5: Indonesia, Singapore, Nepal, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Guam, Sri Lanka, Mongolia

Of those we'd hope to avoid Jordan; we seem to be their bunnies when we play in Amman. Apart from that Thailand in Pot 3 are a lot tougher than the rest.

Easiest; Lebanon, Taiwan, Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka,

Toughest ; Jordan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia

And the groups are out.........

Australia has Jordan (bugger), Taiwan (Yay!), Kuwait (meh) and Nepal (potentially tricky).

The other groups are:

China, Syria, Philippines, Maldives, Guam (Philippines could get through and Guam are a real banana skin; China can't be complacent in this group).

Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Cambodia (Hong Kong to be the challengers, can't see Bahrain or Cambodia doing much in the group).

Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Palestine, Yemen, Singapore (the Desert Eagles and the White Wolves to proceed).

Bangladesh, Oman, India, Qatar, Afghanistan (more of a trade federation than a football grouping, Qatar and then potentially anyone but Bangladesh).

Japan, Kyrgyz, Mongolia, Myanmar, Tajikistan (Japan followed by an utter bun fight for second place. Could be the most interesting group)

UAE, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia. (Almost the ASEAN group! UAE will struggle in the tropics but the ASEAN teams, Thailand aside, are woeful travellers.)

South Korea, Lebanon, North Korea, Turkmenistan, Sri Lanka (South v North...again! What shenannigans will happen this time I wonder?)

I saw too many people online hoping not to draw Jordan, they cursed us. In saying that, if we can't beat Jordan, are we worthy of being in the World Cup?
Graham Arnold's Socceroos, in Pot 1 as a top seeded AFC nation, have been drawn against Jordan, Chinese Taipei, Kuwait and Nepal in Group B of the second round of Asia qualifying for Qatar 2022.
The top team from each group and the four best runners up will progress to the third and final round of qualifying.

.......................and we're off.

First Match Day has been played (Australia with the bye) and in our group, Group B, Kuwait got off to an absolute flier with a 7-0 hammering of Nepal. Graham Arnold take note.

Jordan did what they needed to do with a 1-2 away win against Taiwan.

In the other groups things went largely to script, with a few exceptions:

Thailand only managed a 0-0 draw at home to Vietnam, who will be chuffed with the result.

Mongolia achieved a 1-0 home win over Myanmar which will give them a lot of reasons for cheer.

Possibly upset of the round was Palestine's 2-0 home win over Uzbekistan. The White Wolves will be licking their wounds have a month to ponder their mistakes as they have a bye for the next game day.

It appears the Indonesia-Malaysia game was a hairy affair. Malaysia popped up with a 97' winner, which seems a lot of extra time but the game was stopped for over 5 minutes as some Indonesian fans tried to storm the Malaysian away fans area, throwing flares in the process. The Malaysian team was taken back to their hotel in armoured personnel carriers as a precaution.

It will be interesting to see the AFC and FIFA's response.

2nd Match Day is upon us and the big boys come out to play.

The questions for this Match Day include:
(i) How will the Indonesians manage their crowd against Thailand after the violence of the Malaysia game?
(ii) Will Elkeson line up for China against the Maldives, and what happens if he fails?
(iii) Were the Palestinians lucky against the White Wolves or can they take their form on the road and beat Singapore?
(iv) Can Mongolia make it a historic two wins on the trot when they host Tajikistan?

I guess we'll know the answers this time tomorrow.

The big boys came out and had their perfunctory away wins....except Saudi Arabia who were held to a 2-2 draw by Yemen. Quite a result.

India had the other surprise of the Match Day, holding Qatar to a 0-0 draw in Doha.

Oh, and Elkeson scored a brace for China.

Well that didn't take long. After constructing a 7-0 win for Kuwait over Nepal, the Kuwaiti FA's technical committee has recommended sacking coach Romeo Jozak after the 0-3 loss to Australia. Seems a bit harsh and dare I say premature.
