https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... -australiaAwer Mabil says it’s “normal” to be racially abused in Australia but the freshly-capped Socceroo, who was born in a refugee camp in Kenya, says he doesn’t “judge Australia as a racist place”.

Re: “I have faced it a lot,” : Awer Mabil - Socceroo
It's so sad to read the Awer views his terrible experiences as normal. I can't imagine ever feeling the need to run up to a strangers house, bang on their door and tell them to leave this country.
I find the ironic thing about that sort of behaviour is that go back a few generations and that person's family was in almost the exact same position as Awer's family, as in they left their country behind in a hope of finding a place that is better and found themselves in a strange place very different from where they came from. Only difference between that person's family's experience and Awer's is that that racist person's family was probably afforded every advantage possible to make it work here as was government policy, where as Awer's family, like so many since has had to work and battle to just make it to a point where they have shelter and food on the table consistently.
I'd love to see how those people would last in an African refugee camp for a month.

He is a strong character who has a talent at empowering others. The club has been lucky to have had Awer pass through the ranks and I am looking forward to seeing what he does post-football.

Its terrible that he and his family have experienced this.
Im really not a fan of articles like this over simplifying the issue and just taking a couple of quotes though.
There are much deeper and complicated societal issues at play here that manifest into the few quotes of Mabils that we can all just sit back and say “ oh racism “
Its an eye catching headline though and im sure it got some clicks.
I heard awers brother on the radio recently giving an interview about hiw they managed to get old equipment from the defunt RAH and chucked it in a shipping container sending it to the refugee camp they spent so much time in .
Amazing role models for all !

You need to start the discussion somewhere and sometimes the simple message is the most powerful.
https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... oos-debuts
There is a video of Mabil and Deng receiving their shirts from the team captain.

Totally agree 7g, but the discussion became mainstream way back in the early 90s with Nicky Winmar playing for St Kilda in the AFL.
At some point the conversation has to evolve rather than appealing for a headline and an easy way to sell the news.
Deng and Mabil both playing for the Roos together was a fantastic moment.

Sadly, I think the discussion has stalled Shin.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... fugee-workAwer Mabil’s journey from refugee camp to Socceroos dressing room made headlines last month when he made his debut for the national football team, and now the forward has received yet more global attention after being recognised for his work supporting refugees.

Certainly these aspects of colonisation were utterly absent from my formal education. I can't speak for the curriculum of today,
Interestingly, South Australia didn't assume Terra Nullius when the colony was founded (though did assume most of the land was completely unoccupied). It didn't mean the subsequent interactions with indigenous tribes were terribly different.
There is an interesting time-line of the SA colony's interaction with indigenous cultures here: https://www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/wps/wcm/ ... 16-m08pGcu
For much of it, SA and NT are one colony following the annexation of NT by SA in 1863.

I can not remember any Aboriginal studies at Unley High when I was there.
I think Aboriginal Studies, as an elective, showed up after or around the time I left the school system in 1976.
A lot of new research, re-evaluation and a different awareness of our history now on all levels
(about bloody time ...) but also the usual knee jerk "circle the wagons" type reaction.

Very sad to hear that Awer Mabil's sister, Bor Mabil (19), died in a car crash very early this morning in Andrew's Farm. She was the passenger in one car, the driver of the other car has been arrested.
