2018 J-League

Postby blahblah Sun Apr 22, 2018 9:47 am

9 games in and the table looks odd with Hiroshima & Tokyo leading the way with Sapporo, of all teams, in the mix. Meanwhile the table is being propped up by Nagoya Grampus and Gamba Osaka who are still playing with Endo in the middle of the pitch.

Yokohama F Marinoa, coached by none other than Ange, are struggling with 9 points. They had an entertaining 4-4 draw yesterday against Sagan Tosu, however that is the sort of team they need to be beating if they want to be higher than their current standing of 14th. For a big club there will be a bit of unease as to how the season has started.

Meanwhile V-Varen Nagasaki are 15th, just below Marinos and with a game in hand. Ben Halloran has been warming the pine the bench for them and hasn't done anything special to date. Still, their crowds on even the most miserable of days have been great and they are scoring goals, even though their main striker, Juanma, has yet to find the back of the net and seems to favour one foot which makes him predictable.

Nice win for Ange's Yokohama F. Marinos on the weekend; 3-0 over Kashima Antlers. That's 7 goals scored in two games - mind you they've conceded 4. Still, they seem to be getting the message and I can see them slowly climbing up the table as the season progresses (currently 13th). They are still below V-Varen Nagasaki (12th) though!

It seems that Ange has managed to change the way F.Marinos play though their results will take a while to reflect the change in style. Needless to say there have been defensive issues as the team works out the new system.

https://football-tribe.com/asia/2018/05 ... potential/

After 14 match days Sanfrecce Hiroshima (Vidmar's old club) are running away with the competition with a 10 point lead. F.Marinos are 15th (out of 18) however you get the sense things are about to turn.

The competition's Cindarella club, V-Varen Nagasaki, have yet to turn into a pumpkin and despite their diminuitive budget are looking healthy in 12th. Boisterous fans have helped their cause.

Perhaps the surprise at this point is perennial yo-yo club Consadole Saporro who are sitting third in the standings. To put it in context this is their 7th year in J1 since 1996, and in that time they have only stayed up twice, with a best finish of 11th. Good luck to those chilly lads (it gets fresh up there).

Day 20 has rolled around and Yokohama F-Marinos have the highest number of goals scored in the entire competition, and are in 15th position (out of 18). The reason being that true to Ange's Socceroo form F-Marinos are conceding goals like crazy, with them also having the most amount of goals conceded.

The arrival of Torres at Sagan Tosu hasn't seen a change in their fotunes and they remain in at 16th despite a much needed win over Cerezo Osaka on the weekend.

Iniesta's arrival at Vissel Kobe has had a similar result, though at 7th they are hardly struggling. Still, from what I have read his impact is being felt even if the results are yet to reflect this.

Sanfrecce Hiroshima remain at the top with a 5 point buffer on one of the two surprise clubs at the top, FC Tokyo. The other surprise team in 4th is Consadole Sapporo, who are having a superb season.

Ange was good at Brisbane, Victory and in the first few years as Socceroos boss but he's lost a lot of credibility in my eyes in the last few years. It's like he's playing FIFA on ultra attacking and it just doesn't get the Ws.

Great up-dates blahblah!

Could Ange and his team be heading for relegation?

I don't think so. They had a solid away win against Shonan Bellmare on the weekend, the type of games that should give confidence as they didn't concede. They are away to Kashima Antlers this weekend and if they can snag a point then there will be a lot of pressure easing off Ange, though I think they'll struggle as Kashima are, well, Kashima.

The main problem is Yokohama F. Marinos see themselves as the type of club that should be winning the J-League, not just reaching mid-table mediocrity. I suspect they will give Ange another year if the second half of the season turns in improved performances (which is starting to happen), however they will certainly be expecting to be challenging for silverware in 2019.

I saw my first "Ange is peril of relegation with Marinos" article after the loss to Kashima.

The pressure.

The loss to Kashima wasn't such a surprise, however the table is so tight other results saw Yokohama plummet. The fans will be gettting rather antsy by now.

V-Varen have found themselves on the bottom :(

Ange's Yokohama F Marinos are looking a bit better, but only a bit and that will mean the pressure is still on the coach.

They started September well enough with a win over Kashiwa Reysol and flogging a poor Gamba Osaka side over two legs to reach the Semi-Final of the J-League Cup. A 1-2 loss at home to Urawa Reds would have hurt though last weekend's 1-2 win away over Jubilo Iwata would have helped. Vegalta Sendai at home next week, a side smarting from their loss to V-Varen Nagasaki on the weekend. Yokohama sit 12th at the moment, though that is only 2 points above the relegation zone in a tight bottom-half of the table.

Meanwhile a crazy 3-4 away win at Nagoya and a solid 1-0 home win over Sendai means Halloran-less V-Varen Nagasaki have clawed their way from bottom of the table to bottom of the table with more points. They are now only 3 points and a shed-load of goals from getting out of the relegation zone, though they face an in-form Kawasaki Frontale next week.

At Game 27 of the season, it is Sanfrecce Hiroshima leading the table with Kawasaki 4 points with a game in hand coming second. Then it is daylight, Tokyo FC and then Kashima Antlers who will be turning their focus more and more onto the ACL semi-final.

V-Varen Nagasaki just gave Ange a bit of a life-line with a flat footed goalkeeper followed by missing two gimmes. 0-1 tp F. Marinos.

Kawasaki Frontale have taken the league with 2 games remaining. Sanfrecce Hiroshima will be disappointed with the run into the final part of the season.

All eyes though are on the Persepolis - Kashima game later tonight.
