No Milligan. Please. No Milligan. Such a liability.
He certainly was against Hungary, could have given away two goals. He has done well for the Socceroos but I feel his days in the team must be close to finished. I am not sure whether France will play Giroud but he might play to try exploit the lack of aerial ability of Milligan. We need Sainsbury available to cover for Risdon, something he usually does well, not worried about the aerial threat of Giroud. Sainsbury had a mediocre game against Hungary even if the misunderstanding leading to the own goal is ignored. Leckie is also going have to do a lot a tracking back if Mendy plays like he did against the USA. It will be a bit different because the USA played a 5-3-2 formation so Mendy did not have a winger to cover so was able to play almost like a winger himself. Sidibe did not seem to be as attacking on the other side but that might change if they feel they can exploit Kruse or Arzani defensively.

Spiranovic, if he had managed his career better, would be the only CB that I think would make a huge difference. Jurman or Degenek might be marginally better than MIlligan but they also could just be outclassed by the quality of the French attack. Wilkinson got totally done by Robben last time round and I think he was better than any options we have now.

This WC is already going off!
Julen Lopetegui has been removed as Spain manager a day after it emerged that he had agreed to take over at Real Madrid after the World Cup.

Spanish FA pull the pin!

Very bad by Lopetugi.
Signed a contract extension on a few weeks ago and only told the Spanish Federation he was taking the Real Madrid job 5 minutes before the announcement. Total lack of respect to his employer and rightfully sacked.

Real Madrid takes what Real Madrid wants.

(He'll probably be sacked by Christmas.)

Any national team manager would have done the same thing.

Real madrid would have been better to announce the signing after the cup

Hierro might be the perfect appointment, a Real Madrid hero which will probably appease the Real Madrid players who apparently tried to save Lopetegui, but not Lopetegui so the others players will be happy as well. The kind of appointment that could bring the team back together. Coming from within the setup he will be a steady hand not one who wants to change things, or does not have a full understanding of how Lopetegui wanted the team to play. Playing Portugal might be a good thing as I am sure the players will especially want to beat them and that might pull them together as well.
Still they could fall apart and not get out of the group.

The anticipation grew and I'm now excited that the WC starts today and grateful that Australia won an invitation but I came across this (again) from the last WC and I have to wonder what has changed?
(Apart from the obvious personnel changes.)

But damn it, I am like all of us captured and enthralled by the game and this is the biggest game on the planet.

Embarrassing start for the confederation.

Half time and the saudis are doing their best to make Russia look good

Saudi Arabia attempting, but failing extremely badly, to play a quick short passing game. Russia getting it done by being much more direct and pouncing on the Saudi's regular mistakes.

People are taking this saudi loss a little far.

Claiming there is something wrong with the qualification process is short sighted. The saudis played very well in qualification, countries like Italy and USA did not play well when qualifying. Despite the famous Recoba mantra no one has a divine right to qualify.

When brazil let 7 goals in against germany their right to compete was not questioned.

As far as im concerned, every country who qualified 100% deserves to be there. Countries who did not qualify need only look at their results and blame themselves
