So England now have a very good chance at making a world cup final.

Possibly the worst possible result for most of us lol.

Or the best for a few of us! :) Tough match with appalling refereeing but I loved watching England break their curse. As for the final - it's a long way away. They'll need to beat Sweden with the ball on the ground. Could be a match for Stirling to finally shine?

England through on penalties.
There you go!

As a wog boy growing up in Adelaide with Match of the Day / the Big Match, Brian Moore / Jimmy Hill and the touring UK clubs at Hindmarsh I have to admit I have a strange sort of soft spot for the English national team.

Let me qualify this by saying I don't get "sad" when England fail as it can be quite funny some times especially with all the hubris over the years but I'm pleased when they do well without any of the bullshit histrionics and play acting that affect some players and some teams.
They always play the game in the right spirit.
(All the Home Nations do.)

The game against Sweden will be interesting and anything could happen.

A few days break and on we go towards the climax!

Mainstream media using the brawl in the basketball to slam an incident at the world cup

Wasnt a great wc moment by any means but did it warrant a good old sokkah bashing article? Ofcoursssssse!

They will lose to Sweden and it will be a Uruguay - Sweden final.

As an orienteer and a person that has a plethora of Swedish mates (been to the place several times as well), I am all for Sweden on this one.

On top of that I have an English mate here in Myanmar who is going to be insufferable if England win the World Cup. For the sake of the collective sanity of people in Yangon, go Sweden!

Wow! Russia almost made the semis!

Were they just lucky? Or masters of controlling a game without the ball?

Russia were very well organised and they worked very hard.
With a bit of luck the shoot out could have gone the other way.
They did exceptionally well to progress this far considering the mess they were in before the WC kicked off.

Hats off to the hosts.

Anyway where were we?
Yes, the quarter finals.

Uruguay out.
Sweden out.
Russia out.
Brazil out.
Far out!

If I'm not mistaken it's the first time since 1930 that one of Brazil, Germany (West Germany) or Argentina are not in the semifinals.

All European semi- final line up.

France - Belgium
England - Croatia

Not what a lot of people expected.

I cant say any country remaining have played football you expect from wc winners, sure they have had their moments but no consistency.

Im thinking france and CROATIA in the finals. Mbappe to be hailed Pele mkii signalling the end if the messi/ronaldo era
