Lucas Neill's 2014 FIFA World Cup selection hopes received a boost with the Australia captain playing 90 minutes for Blackburn's Under-21 side in its 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur Under-21.

How many more kids is he going to keep out of the game!

It gets worse!
Lucas Neill isn’t ready to call time on his playing career yet.

The former West Ham defender could be on the verge of a return to Australian football with NSW Premier League club Sydney Olympic.

The club Tweeted on Monday afternoon that it is in discussions with the Socceroos skipper, who has not played a competitive game since leaving Japanese club Omiya Ardija in December.

Yeah. There's nothing wrong with him giving back to the game playing in the local league like this but if he thinks this is enough to play in the WC he's dreaming!

Wow. It beggars belief.

He was such a great defender, probably the best in my time, but this is just ridiculous.

As my dad said to me today (about Luca$), some people just don't know when to call it quits.

I do quite like it when players just continue on - even at a low level - because they love the game so much, but LN has shown several times over his career that its as much (if not more) about the filthy lucre (which was incidentally his nickname at the Hammers) as it is about the game.

I think Gala was the only club he's played at where he wasn't involved in one by the time he was leaving the club!

If anything Watford will be pushing for playoffs. Can't see them getting dragged into a relegation battle.

Not as good as they were last year, but a solid top half team in the Championship.

So how the hell is Lucas going to get a game there! Surely he's just a back up?

Yeah dunno. Most clubs at that level want to add depth in each position.

I just think that league will be far too quick for him. Pace seems to have been the part of his game that has deteriorated the most (not that he was ever quick, but he could certainly keep up) and the Championship is lightning fast.

Good luck to him though.

I all honesty I hope he barely plays.
I'm sick of him keeping younger players out of the Socceroos XI IMO his career has been stretched out so far I can't remember when I was actually happy to see him in our XI. Probably 2010.

Yeah it's ridiculous. I can't believe a team signed him when his only intention is to play in another World Cup - he'll skip club games to play in friendlies (if selected) and will probably retire immediately after the WC.

Props to Schwarzer, Emmo et al who were true professionals and stood down.

Went out on a high and everyone respected them for it.
