Booing sochi shows the west's bigotry

Some say it is the journalistic nature of the Western media to be critical and ready to challenge authorities. But the excuse sounds so hypocritical when you look at the Western coverage of the 2012 London Summer Games, which was much more friendly and festive.

Since the ending of the Cold War, only the 2008 Beijing Games and the ongoing Sochi Games have experienced such criticism. It is surprising how much the Western media stick to their bigotry.
We are a fairly level headed bunch on WATR's so i doubt this will become a locked thread.

I thought it was an interesting article and i tend to agree with it

I disagree, I think it's fair enough to criticise a country with a human rights record as poor as Russia's. Positioning the Games in Sochi (in the Caucasus, very close to Chechnya, etc) is a strategically symbolic move: it's saying to people "this is Russia", flexing muscles of sovereignty over the region.
Meanwhile Pussy Riot are being whipped by Cossacks nearby, and the government of the Russian puppet state in the Ukraine are murdering protesting civilians...
And don't get me started on China and the Beijing Olympics...

i dont think sport should be political though.

No doubt russia and china have had/have their issues but who chooses to draw the line of which country is accepted and which is not ?

Even listening to the aussie commentators there is a cold undertone when talking about the Chinese athletes which to me is sad but shows where we are as a nation still.

Sport should be something to unite people and bring them together

If you dig a little deeper away from the mainstream media the west has just as many things to answer for only difference being we are better at sweeping it under the carpet.

I agree but I think in this day and age spot and politics do mix. It might have been before then but I think the day Hitler brought the Olympics to Germany Sport and politics mixed. Now its quite a regular thing. Sometimes good like with the Liberals wanting to join Adelaide United in engaging Asia or bad with China, Russia and possible Qatar.
Yes I agree who are the West to judge on human rights violations.

Surely FIFA would have to be rethinking the 2018 World Cup in Russia...?

A WC boycott of Russia by the "West" led by
weltmeister Germany will lead to world football splitting into "reactionary Fifa" and "progressive Uefa camps".

Choose your side gentlemen...

"VLADIMIR PUTIN has responded to the international outrage over the destruction of a Malaysian airliner by his proxies in eastern Ukraine by escalating his aggression. According to U.S. officials, tanks, artillery and other heavy weapons have continued to cross from Russia to Ukraine since the passenger jet was shot down. On Wednesday, two more Ukrainian military jets were hit by anti-aircraft missiles, which Ukrainian officials said had been fired from Russia. The State Department also said Thursday that Russian artillery was firing at Ukrainian positions from across the border."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/ ... story.html

Ukraine's PM has also resigned after his coalition collapsed. Who knows what all this means for Ukraine now....
"Incredibly, the European Union’s position — tacitly supported by Mr. Obama — is that the Ukrainian government should stop attempting to expel the invaders from its territory and instead negotiate with them about the political future of Ukraine."
Hope I'm wrong, but appeasement of a warmongering, expansionist power hasn't always turned out great, has it?

You're right Old Greg, it ends up ugly.

And Ukraine was farked over something bad by both Stalin and Hitler in the last century.
Millions of deaths.

Forgive my ignorance but what is it that putin wants from ukraine ?

Its obviously for real estate. I think i read somewhere there was a major source of energy or something on the border or was it just a military base that they were more or less renting ?
