PC Virus help

Postby terry tibbs Thu Mar 03, 2011 8:59 pm

My PC's been hit by malware called Vista Security 2011. I've read a bit and run some scans (AVG and avast, both free) but apparently need to manually delete some registry keys.

Anyone had this or got any constructive tips? (Get a Mac doesn't count right now...)

Oh, I'm sorry I can't help you.
Just reading your post scared me.

Good luck!

So far its mainly really, really annoying. May be the excuse I needed to get a new computer.

Ususally something like malwarebytes will get rid of this stuff: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (it's free). If the malware won't let you go to that site then download from another computer. Sometimes the malware also won't let you run the installer so try booting into safe mode to install or rename the installer file so something random.

Cheers. Ran Malwarebytes and between that and avast it seems to have knocked it on the head at the moment.

Saw a major cleanout your PC guide on majorgeeks.com which I'll try to run over the weekend to make sure its gone.

Tibbs

I cannot stress enough that you need to have permenant anit virus software running on your computer.

Otherwise its like playing russian roulette with a mini gun.

I have come across a couple of these "security" malwares recently and they are quite insidious. Purchase and register your anti virus every year. It is not that expensive and will save you much grief.

You don't need to buy another computer to rid of a virus. You can always action a system restore, if enabled in windows, or you can format your pc and reinstall windows if you find that a malware/adware application won't fix the core problem.

Antivirus apps are good, but even they are not going to capture everything.

The only real way to avoid *any* virus is by installing Linux as your operating system.
