It is possible. Certainly slowing the spread of the virus will better enable our health system to cope, and huge crowds at sports events are not going to assist.

The Swiss League has shut down its 1st & 2nd tier given their proximity to Northern Italy.

On the bright side the muppets panic buying toilet paper has seen a surge in production in SA, as we produce most of the product. We won't run out, not nearly given the production capacity, however it has seen Kimberly-Clark switch it's factory to 24 hour production. Keep buying you tools!

LOL! Doubling down on the toilet paper thing , Asaleo went up over 10% when this panic buying started, bucking the market trend. Seemingly investors wanted the toilet paper AND a share in the company. Pretty funny stuff

Very interesting time for club football around the world.

Serie A playing behind closed doors at least until april, likely longer with the clubs from northern italy likely having to play their home games south of lombardy.

Premier league is also likely to go behind closed doors a few reports have confirmed.

Its no secret how poorly many clubs are run financially, with all matchday revenues halting and a potential refund to members you have to wonder if we will see a rise and fall of many clubs and leagues around the world.

Imagine what it could do to the aleague and our own clubs.

To quote a very wise old man “ Only when the tide goes out do you discover who's been swimming naked.”

Given the obscene amount of money in asia and the middle east who knows which clubs and leagues will rise and fall.

Many clubs in Asia are run as extensions of the ego of the wealthy, so it will be very interesting indeed.

A lot of clubs from smaller/poorer countries are being exclusively run via the largesse of owners who do not necessarily have deep pockets and who have not done a good job of looking for alternative income streams or strengthening the governance of their clubs. They will be ill-equipped to deal with a dearth of cash injections.

I can see a lot of foreign coaches and players coming onto the market.

The NBA has been postponed, US closes borders with Europe. Epidemiologists is Aus calling for us to close all air borders school and public gathering to get ahead of the situation.

I think its unlikely the A-league will be completed, so much revenue the clubs will miss out on.

Wonder how FFA may be protected with the foxtel TV deal? tough times for football!

I guess the remainder of the season can be played behind closed doors. It will be interesting to see if they persist with a finals series.

The nix would be required to live in australia for the whole season if so. Which would have visa issues for their imports.

There is now a 14 day quarantine for all non/ kiwis unless returning from the pacific islands, In new zealand

An aufc youth player is in quarantine as his class mate at sacred heart got it .

Football is a contact sport. It has to be cancelled surely.

Warning.... non football related rant coming

The world has finally woken up to what was very clear in january/ febuary. Epidemiologists were predicting this as a near certainty, markets continued to rise, people continued to travel, governments mostly put their heads in the sand.

This is a fantastic case study of how broken our media systems are, taking a today hosts word over leaders in their field and going about their day. Now we have gone to the complete other end of the spectrum from not caring and its panic stations which is equally stupid.

Its super interesting people who were correctly putting the correct info out on the interwebs very early on have been shadow banned, deleted, shunned and discredited from all kinds of media.

Its a much bigger issue now, we have supply issues world wide, demand issues world wide, crazy house hold debt in this country and the opec russia crises.. hold onto your hats.

Shorters like eric townsend would have made an absolute mint in recent weeks

Good point, the NZ quarantine restrictions is a biggie for the A-League. It will be reviewed in 16 days however I can see it tightening rather than relaxing, particularly as the Australian cases kick-off.

Poor 'Nix; they're finally looking the goods and then this.

Re: responses: it has been interesting to see how the virus has been contained in Northern Asia; much to learn from Korea and Japan.

Just announced that Australia is following suit with 14 day quarantine required by all international arrivals after midnight tonight.

From an A-league perspective-

Wellington and MV play today in NZ, if both teams cannot make it to Australia before midnight they will be unable to compete in their next 2 games.

This could be the last round of the A-league or we could see a postponement of at least 2 weeks possibly?

MV can forfeit two games, though we should reschedule the 'Nix matches :)

Malaysia just went into lockdown. I guess it will be a pattern repeated around the World.

It will be curious to see when football resumes, possibly at the time when the virus is so prevalent that isolation is no longer effective.

My guess is the Chinese Super League will be one of the first to resume when the governments wishes to make a public statement that the crisis is over, or the 'new normal' has begun. That or the J-League if the Japanese wish to push ahead with the Olympics (even if it is delayed by several months).

Basically every other football league in the world have been postponed, the A-league is pressing on for now.

I don't agree with this at all, the least people travelling the better in regard to community health. We already have a lop-sided league where we play teams an uneven amount of times, just give SFC the premiership already.

Obviously FOX has lost so much content recently, its possibly the TV deal may be a total deal breaker for the league.
