2020 AFC U23 Qualifiers

Postby blahblah Sat Mar 23, 2019 8:43 am

Kicked off last night with the Olyroos defeating Cambodia 6-0 in Phnom Penh. South Korea, also in our group, defeated Taiwan 8-0 leaving us second in the group.

Riley McGree nabed a goal and George Blackwood spent the match warming the pine. I assume he'll start against Taiwan on the 24th as GA keeps the squad as fresh as he can for the South Korea match on the 26th.

We need to either top the group or be one of the top 4 second placed teams to make it to the final in Thailand (from where the 2020 Olympic representatives will be decided). Hence the game against South Korea is looming as the key game.

There have been no upsets thus far, though Mongolia's 0-1 loss to North Korea must have made for some nervous moments for those watching in Pyongyang.

Another easy win, this time 6-0 over Chinese Taipei. Blackwood didn't find the back of the net though I could not see the game so don't know how he played. He was dropped back into the midfield rather than subbed, so I assume he was playing well and setting things up.

South Korea had a 6-1 win over Cambodia, which leaves them first. We probably just need a draw to proceed as one of the best second placed sides, though a win would be nice. Tbe only real challenge of this stage us coming up tomorrow night.

Sqeaky bum time as all the other groups, bar one, have the top two teams with the same wins as us and are all playing each other this round. In the end we need a draw to guarantee to proceed. A loss would mean we are out if four or more of the nine groups in our situation have draws between the top two teams.

It turns out that a draw was what everyone was after, with seven of the nine groups in our situation having a draw!

The usual suspects got through under that guise with Australia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Syria all progressing thanks to their draws. Tajikistan, Oman & Malaysia should all have pushed a little harder, however their opponents (Uzbekistan, Qatar & China) were also after a draw so no doubt stifled their attempts.
