A much better performance from Saudi last night with the 0-1 loss to Uruguay. They butchered some really good chances which was frustrating.

Iran defended then attacked, but still lost to Spain 0-1. Portugal have been lucky in their two games thus far, somehow beating Morocco despite being comfortably outplayed for the vast majority of the game. Put that down to Ronaldo. Certainly there is no reason Iran cannot defeat them on the final day, a result they need to proceed.

Hmm, South Korea have been a disappointment. Another loss despite Son's efforts and another uninspiring performance, particularly in the 1st half. Shin Tae-Yong has not managed to get the best out of this team. not by a long margin.

Decent result from Japan though Osako butchered the chance to win the game. Inui continues his great form and Kawashima continues his poor form. Nishinio needs to do something about Kawashima as he is costing Japan goals and seems to be getting his timing and positioning all wrong. Nice to see Honda back on the score sheet. TIme on the bench seems to have invigorated him.

A draw in the next game against an already relegated Poland will guarantee a move to the Round of 16.

Saudi finish with a good win over Egypt (which they still managed despite missing a penalty). It is good to see them recover after the Russian humiliation. A decent game against Uruguay and a win against Egypt means they will take something from this World Cup and have undone much of the damage to Asian football's reputation they wrought in the opening match.

Iran have a draw with Portugal which leaves them on 4 points, insufficient to leave what was a tough group (Portugal & Spain finishing with 5). They did ok in difficult matches however you have the sense they never really got firing. Whilst on paper it is a decent World Cup peformance, I suspect there is some disappointment in Iran that they did not progress.

I read somewhere that the South Korean trainer is not very confident having given his team only 1% chance of getting anything out of the game.

South Korea 2-0 Germany

Far out!
The Germans added the other 99%.
From World Champion to group last!

Well done South Korea!

Excellent win!
I'll be congratulating every South Korean I meet from now on for that win.

Amazing game to watch. it is a pity the high intensity South Korea showed in this game was missing from the previous two.

How was the goalkeeper, Cho Hyun-woo? He was fantastic. Clearly headed for Europe after 3 very impressive displays in Russia. The Germany game was only his 9th cap.

The keeper was great!
Kept out everything the Germans aimed at him.
And you could see German heads dropping every time he saved or they missed.

WC is one thing, full season in Europe another especially if you start by sitting on the bench.
If he is playing regularly in the K-league then I would suggest he stay there till he has a fixed "number one" contract.

And the Mexicans are also happy.

So the World Cup is over for the AFC after a crazy game last night.

In the end it wasn't a horrible World Cup for Asia but one where the region should have done better with Iran just missing out on the Round of 16, Japan failing to reach the Quarters despite a 0-2 lead and South Korea only clicking into gear in the last game. Still, Morocco, Colombia, Germany and Egypt all succumbed to Asian opposition whilst Portugal, Senegal and Denmark were unable to best them.

Compared to CAF, CONEMBOL and OFC the AFC teams went well however it was a World Cup of missed opportunities and hopefully one that the region can build upon for the next outing in Qatar 2022.
