Kashima Antlers accounted for Shanghai SIPG 3-1. The away goal could prove valuable however Shaghai have all the work to do in the return leg.
Ulsan defeated Suwon 1-0 in the first leg.

So Kashima knocked out shanghai SIPG, and deservedly so. SIPG managed to get a non-penalty) however the resulting 2-1 win wasn't enough to overcome the first leg deficit. Jeonbuk easily accounted for Buriram and Suwon decimated Ulsan 3-0 with Jurman being active throughout the game (including an assist, I think). Tianjin also made it through against Guangzhou Evergrande.
Out West is was a case of the Iranian and Qatari sides knocking out the Saudia and UAE sides, something that will have the Saudi politicians writhing.
Draw for the quarterfinals is on the 23rd of May.

Kashima Antlers v Tianjin Quanjain
Jeonbuk v Suwon
Esteghlal v Al-Sadd
Al-Duhail v Persepolis
Al-Duhail, a club formed from a merger in Qatar earlier this year, have been wiping the floor with all and sundry. It will be interesting to see how they go in Iran.

The Quarterfinals first leg kicked off last night with Esteghlal losing 1-3 at home to Al-Sadd. That very much puts the tie in the Qatari's favour, not least as the single goal the Iranians managed was an own goal.

Kashima put two past Tianjin to be going into the return leg with some confidence.
The surprise was Al-Duhail, who have previously looked imperious, managing only a 1-0 win against Persepolis (though that does make it 9 AFC wins in a row). The Iranians will fancy their chances in the return leg in Tehran.

Last game for the 1st leg and Suwon put 3 past hosts Jeonbuk in the all-Korean affair. They have one foot in the semi-final.

Persepolis did the job against Al-Duhail and will meet Al-Sadd who proceeded via a 2-2 draw with Esteghlal in a game littered with goal keeping howlers.
Tianjin looked like they were going to dominate Kashima after the first 17 minutes, but then the Japanese decided to start playing football and it became the 'Kashima Show', running out 0-3 winners. The game was played in Macau due to the World Economic Forum being held in Tianjin, resulting in a rather sparse crowd for a fixture that was expecting to be packed.
Baring a miracle tonight, it will be Suwon v Kashima and Al-Sadd v Persepolis.

Nearly stuffed up that prediction! Jeonbuk won 0-3, a had a penalty saved in the '92 which would have won it for them. After extra time it went to penalties and Hwa Yong, the Suwon keeper who saved the '92 minute effort saved a couple more to get Suwon through to the semi-final against Kashima.
Wow, I did not see that coming!

Semi-finals are nicely poised with Pereipolis taking a handy 0-1 away win at Al Sadd and Kashima Antlers a thrilling 3-2 home win over Suwon Bluewings. The return legs are on the 23rd of October.

A couple of cracking games in the semi's. Persepolis managed to hold off a Xavi-led Al Sadd to finish with a 1-1 draw in an absolutely packed and heaving Azadi stadium - by Gods I hope AUFC have the chance to play there one day. In the other semi and absolute goal fest was to be had with Kashima coming back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with Suwon Bluewings.
That leaves a very satisfying AFC Champions League Final with two huge, non-money bags clubs that have never made it to the final in the competitions. Both clubs are long time forces in their respective domestic leagues but have never quite cracked it at the continental level.
Whatever the outcome, this season's ACL has been a beauty.

1st leg went to Kashima, 2-0, and deservedly so. Abe has followed up from his AFC u-19 performance and is shaping to be a real talent.
Persepolis have some work to do however will use the cauldron of Azidi to their full advantage next Saturday.

And the winner is Kashima!
0-0 in a packed Azidi leaves Japan's most successful club domestically finally grabbing the continental title. MVP for the tournament went to Yama Suzuki from Kashima, not a bad effort from the 22 y.o.
It has been a good ACL and certainly something Adelaide needs to get back into.
