Much of the football investment was political risk management as the billionaires were seen to be investing in China's international standing as well as one of Xi Jinping's pet projects. Now things are turning South economically with billionaires and ostentatious behaviour being targeted. Owning huge football clubs is about as ostentatious as it gets and what was initially a risk management strategy is now looking quite the opposite.
