WATRs Greatest AU Side - CBs
We continue on! This appears to be the toughest vote so far.
Again users are able to pick their best 3 CBs. The top 2 will make the 11. Third place getter will be on the bench.

Have to think about this one.... I have to say I have absolutely no recollection of Isyan Erdogan. Sorry Isyan if you're reading this!

Re: WATRs Greatest AU Side - CBs
An even tougher choice than WB, it's really making me think about criteria.
-overall performance/growth (Boogard)
-cult status (Iain Fyfe's beard, flakes)
-quality of the player (Jakobsen)
-loyalty (Elsey)
-meme votes (Bodrusic)
-nostalgia (Valkanis, Constanzo)
I'm finding that players that move to another A-league club and play well against us lose some of their shine for me. La Rocca and McGowan were both epic during our championship season but McGowan becoming the wsw captain (also Cornflakes) and LaRocca following up that season with a shocker (including that stunning own goal). Ersan Gulum, instant cult figure but fleeting. Golec, amazing away goal against Bunyodkor but has played for every club in the world since.
I'll have to think a bit more about this haha

I made my choice. Don't feel great about it given the CBs that didn't get a vote.
Toughie indeed.

Bloody hard and it's probably only going to get harder ...

Re: WATRs Greatest AU Side - CBs
Yes its interesting. As I post these what criteria is important runs thru my head. The things I'm looking for are:
- Part of a successful squad (eg. Featured heavily in the Championship season, which is why McGowan got a vote in this from me)
- Displayed quality over several seasons (which sadly counts big Sasa out for me, one season of quality isn't enough IMO)
- Developed as a player with AU (Elrich is a prime example. entered an A-League standard player, left a starting Socceroo)
- Big money returner (Generated a transfer fee for AU, then came back to the club) this list is pretty short tho...)
- The manner in how they exit the club (as good as Flores was, he'd never get a vote in my books)
Thats a tiered criteria in my head to the last point counts the least and first point counts the most.

Re: WATRs Greatest AU Side - CBs
Played one year in 2007/08. I was pretty sure he was nominally a right back and played his best games in that position, (well game, a strong substitute appearance vs Victory,) and only ever played in the centre of defence due to the horrendous run with injuries that year. I remember at one point there was a back 3 of Cornthwaite-Milardovic (his 4 games surely exceed Bodrusic's 4 games)-Erdogan and Travis Dodd at right wing back.Have to think about this one.... I have to say I have absolutely no recollection of Isyan Erdogan. Sorry Isyan if you're reading this!
Which does raise the question of what to do with players who split their careers between multiple positions

Re: WATRs Greatest AU Side - CBs
I guess people will most likely vote the player in the position they played most frequently in (e.g. Goodwin hasn't polled very high as a wingback but I reckon he'll be right up there in the winger poll)..
For CB I'm going with players who were most reliable & consistent, a mainstay in the position over several seasons

All I need is some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.

Re: WATRs Greatest AU Side - CBs
A little surprised by the lack of love for Jako. He's saved our arses so many times, sprinted with some of the fastest forwards in the league and made a better player out of just about anyone who's played beside him. Tough as nails too.
But he is nowhere near as much fun as Cornflakes.
And the Og-monster could have played one game and still got a vote from me. Legend.

Cornflakes, standing over Rivaldo telling him to get up. Surely the photo is worth a vote alone. But he is nowhere near as much fun as Cornflakes.
Maybe we need a "Hall of Wonders" where we have items with magical properties; the photo of Corny & Rivaldo, Belter's white cap, Ian Fyfe's beard, Kossie's broken white plastic chair.

Stuckey I hope you put Cornthwaite in as a striker option when the time comes!I guess people will most likely vote the player in the position they played most frequently in (e.g. Goodwin hasn't polled very high as a wingback but I reckon he'll be right up there in the winger poll)..
