Finals is a lottery. So we live in hope. But we’re definitely the underdogs, whoever we end up playing.

Well looks like we failed the top 4 target set by the club at the start of the season. Scraped past 10 men and lost any chance of a home final.

So that means we'll more than likely play Brisbane away in a knock out match now?

Could also be Central Coast. Let's see what unfolds. So that means we'll more than likely play Brisbane away in a knock out match now?

If Veart hadn't completely confused D'Arrigo by taking him away from the position he plays brilliantly to put him in one he plays poorly, we might be a little more solid. Still, some great moments tonight but still not anywhere near good enough. So long vs 10 and that was the best we could do? Yes, we could have scored five. And conceded five. Zero ambition to win it in the last stages.
I loved the start of this season. Unpredictable, brave, slightly crazy football. The last seven or eight games have been the opposite. Predictably crazy. Tomi was a big 'in' though and with some half-sensible team choices we have a shot still.
And the gentle rain fell.....

Played for the draw. Very disappointing against 10 tbh. 3rd up for grabs and a home final. Making up numbers playing away isn't success in my eyes.We should have brought on Niyongabire 20 minutes ago.
Only photos of this BBQ can lift my mood!!!!!!
I BBQ'd for the family today.
It was special because May was wet, cool and quite miserable, especially with all the other crap that is going on here in Austria and so far June has been sunny and warm.
It was also a public holiday today making it a longer weekend.
And the cherry on the cake was AU's game so I was especially emotive with my morning greetings.

That game was a microcosm of our season. Played some brilliant stuff at times, especially the first fifteen minutes of each half. Then completely went off the boil and seemed devoid of ideas. Throw in some dodgy referring, some head scratching substitutions at the end and the fact that somehow we're still in the hunt and that's our season in a nutshell.
It has been a very frustrating year, but only because at times it's been so promising.

Inspired by Martin's comment, I decided to do a little research. Hope this is right.
If we divide the season in two:
First half of season 8W, 1D, 4L. Second half of season 3W, 5D, 5L.
If we divide the season in three:
(9 games, 8 games, 9 games): First third of season 4W, 1D, 4L. Second third of season 5W, 2D, 1L. Final third of season 2W, 3D, 4L.
Against the teams that have made the finals:
Melbourne City: Win (H), Loss (A)
Sydney: Win (H), Draw (A), Loss (H)
Brisbane: Loss (A), Win (H)
Central Coast: Win (H), Loss (A)
Macarthur: Loss (A), Win (H)
So, middle of the season easily the best for us. We haven't beaten another finalist away from home all season. But, we have beaten all of them.

This season has (thus far) reminded me a lot of the first Gombau season. Terrible for the first third of the year, Essentially unbeatable in the middle third, and faded away badly at the end of the year (something often forgotten about that year).

I'm a lot more positive about both last bight and the season as a whole than I probably should be. We streaked away in the middle of the season and noone could touch us; and then we came back to the pack when some longterm injuries, a couple of suspensions and some chronically bad luck all played their part. We could easily have lost last night, which would have meant a second straight year of finishing seventh and out of the finals; but we didn't and while we are alive, we're alive.
Imagine what our season next year will look like ...

Wellington win 3-0 to kick us up to 5th.
Central coast lose by 4 goals against Western United and we get a home final. Not a completely unreasonable scoreline but unlikely.
Imagine if it did happen....
We play CCM at home in the elimination final, beat them with the help of 3 dodgy pens.
Macarthur jag a win in Brisbane against all odds.
City and Sydney are both depleted by national team duty and lose their semi finals to us and Macarthur.
We host the grand final at Adelaide oval v Macarthur with 50k in the crowd. We dominate the whole first half but don't have a goal to show, even though we've had a few good chances. Second half starts and Macarthur scores 2 quick goals, we don't recover and then at the 80 min mark we bring on Toure, Toure and a heavily strapped Yengi to play in our 4-2-0-5 formation. They score again and we all catch covid because the referee had the Indian strain of covid and has been blowing his whistle all game, sending dangerous vapours into the air that swirl around the stadium.
Then the long off season starts....
