Preview: Sydney FC v AUFC, Sunday 18/04/21
It is a short turn-around and neither Juric nor Mauk looked 100% at the end of the game on Wednesday; there is a good chance that both could start on the bench.
As such it may be a start for Al Hassan and D'Arrigo coming in for Mauk as we look at a slightly more defensive midfield.
The Halloran-Strain combo on the right has been scintillating, particularly Strain, so no changes there and Cavallo looked good on the left on Wednesday so I assume will remain, though a far sterner test awaits as Barbarouses is starting to click.
Last time out D'Arrigo did a good job closing down Ninkovic however now it will be Timotheou rather than Jakobsen to keep a close eye on Bobo's runs. Timotheou has been getting better each week so this will be an interesting stoush.
This could be a very open game, if so Al Hassan is going to have fun.

This will be a huge test but I think we can pass it.
Given we played on Wednesday, I think bringing in some fresh legs is a good idea, especially if Juric and Mauk are struggling with fitness.
This is what I’d go with:
Gauci
Strain Elsey Timotheou Kitto
Juande
Cavallo D’Arrigo
Halloran A Toure Goodwin
Oschenham, Marrone, Caletti, Mauk, Niyongabire, Juric

I am loving the playing style and the depth of the squad. I think, however, that Kusini Yengi should be up front or at least on the bench for this one. Juric should be rested. Yengi has done exceptionally well and doesn't deserve to be cut from the squad. Let him run at Sydney's central defenders in combination with the in-form Al Hassan Toure at some stage of the match.

That looks good. Tough on Caletti, who did really well Wednesday night, but I think Cavallo is our best chance as an AM to replace Mauk. This will be a huge test but I think we can pass it.

I wouldn’t want to move Goodwin or Halloran inside and lose what’s working well out wide. And I don’t fancy playing a striker as an AM against Sydney as it would leave us too exposed.

I don't think changes to the back 4 are required, Cavallo has been killing it at LB.
My concern with bringing in D’Arrigo is that when he plays alongside Juande he's not as effective as he plays a more advanced role (which I don't think he is suited to).
Caletti had a good came and is more of an engine room type mid.
If all fit, go in unchanged.

Absolutely. I think Caletti earned his place.I don't think changes to the back 4 are required, Cavallo has been killing it at LB.

No Yengi for this one again, back next week.
I see D'arrigo coming back in and Caletti to bench as the only changes.

I keep waiting for Cavallo to be found out defensively, but it just hasn't happened. Judging by Carl's pre match presser he will adopt a "ain't broke, don't fix" attitude to the back line and leave Josh at LB. I really thought Kitto would slot back in there once fit, but JC just seems to get better every game he plays there.
I think Caletti did enough on Wednesday night to keep his spot too. No changes for me if all fit.

I really don't like playing players out of position but Cavallo is doing really well at left back so if Mauk is 100%, then keep him there.
Delianov is back in full training but needs to get his fitness back up before being selected. Carl said in his presser that they'll look to give him a couple of games in the NPL before recalling him.

Yull, Dukuly and Abetew were named in the extended squad but are playing NPL today so surely won’t be on the bench for tomorrow.

I think I heard or read somewhere that Cavallo played left back at the start of his career. No sources or facts to back that up.I really don't like playing players out of position but Cavallo is doing really well at left back so if Mauk is 100%, then keep him there.

He played as a wing back a few times for WU but he’s mainly a CM as far as I’m aware. His brother Christian who used to play for City is a left back thoughI think I heard or read somewhere that Cavallo played left back at the start of his career.
