Well, if they had scored the two penalties it would have been 4-1. That would not have been a fair representation of the match, but I think it’s fair to say they were the better team on the night. As much as I hate to say it, when we went ahead we should have parked the bus.
Goodwin was missing in action tonight. I’ve got used to the way he slow plays and turns back time and again, and then when the time is right he turns it on, slips in behind the opposition defence and whips in a perfect cross. Tonight he just never turned it on, never showed any urgency. I actually wasn’t surprised when he was subbed.
Apart from the goal Yengi was also ineffective. Whether it was a one off anti-climax performance after the last thrill of his last game only time will tell.
I'm not too upset about last night. Gauci was magnificent and kept us in it when we had no right to be. CCM only got their goals after Jacko went off with a side or stomach strain, which temporarily upset the backline balance. If that unfortunate bouncing ball had not bounced under Gauci's hands for the CCM tap in, then it would have been 1 - 1 and I think that both sides would have agreed that that was a fair result.
Sometimes a kick up the backside isn't such a bad thing for a young team either; it reminds them that they are mortal and that other teams do not simply stand still through a season.
I will go out on a limb and say that this is the best season ever for the A-League - in terms of both skill level and the excitement factor. The word on the street is that overseas fans are now regularly streaming the A League matches; they started because we have actual crowds here, unlike anywhere in the northern hemisphere, so that adds the expected atmosphere - and then they keep watching for the quality. If so, then that is an enormous feather in the FFA's cap and it means that Foxtel will have to increase their offer for the next A League rights negotiations, when everyone expected the Foxtel offer to be slashed, given world events last year. If that comes off, then that means that better players come in next season and the standard goes up again - a virtuous circle.
So maybe COVID could yet be the A League's silver lining ....
