Memorable moments of the last decade

Postby mcjules Thu Dec 05, 2019 12:24 pm

There's a few twitter hashtags floating around remembering significant and or funny moments over the past decade.

Thinking back Adelaide United has been a real rollercoaster of highs and lows so I thought it might be fun to discuss our own memorable moments.

I'll start with a few obvious ones:

1. The Gerrard/Griffin era: Started in late 2010 and IMO defined everything that happened from then on
2. Winning trophies: Feel free to elaborate on these as we've actually had a pretty decent run this decade IMO :)
3. The Gombau/Val wars: Along with "pissant town" and while silly and petty, "your son's a shit goalkeeper" is one of those crazy memorable quotes that will forever be associated with the club

- The rise of Marcos Flores
- The Gerard Consortium, Greg Griffin and everything that went with him
- The sagas of Rini Coolen, John Kosmina and to a lesser extent, Valkanis

- Josep Gombau in general
- Dexter Rosales.

Corny standing over the prone Rivaldo in the win over Bunyodkor in Tashkent.

Defeating African champions Al Ahly 1-0 in the Club World Cup.

EDIT: Just realised the Al Ahly game was 11 years ago as was the ACL match in Uzbekistan. Crikey, where did all the time go!?!

Visiting Adelaide and going to two United home games in the 2014-15 season.
A 0-0 draw with Sydney FC and the 2-1 victory over the Wellington Phoenix.

The FFA Cups and the Championship Season.
The Kosmina / Muscat thing.

Dom and Albie calling the United games on the radio.

Some of these weren't in the last 10 years but that's OK. Still good to remember :)

Here's one from May 2010. The end result wasn't memorable but this goal at 6:15 in this video was for Eugene's reaction :D

Here's a few of my favorite memories in no particular order-

Our first and only Johnny Warren medalist.

Our first and only golden boot winner.

Our first and only home final.

Our first and only goal of the season winner.

Melbourne Victory beating Brisbane Roar to secure us the premier's plate in the final round even though MV were out of the 6 and had nothing to play for.

Vidosic dropping Flores within 5 seconds of kick off on his return to Hindmarsh.

Michael Marrone wrestling the ball from the ball boy in the FFA cup semi final.

Iain Fyfe's beard and the running joke that went with it.

Lloyd Owusu's 1 goal.

Eugene Galekovic's amazing reflex saves against Josh Kennedy in the ACL.

Golec's counter attack goal away against Bunyodkor.

Cam Watson's 1 goal from 130 appearances. A penalty that he scored and then had to retake, then scored again.

Iain Ramsay scoring with his right foot.

My most memorable moments of the last 10 years in reverse order of intensity:

Number 3:
Van Dijk's scorching free kick in the 4-1 win against MV in 2011 and seeing him wheeling away, arms out towards Top Gun Jimmy and the rest of the AU fans there in the corner at AAMI Park. I wasn't there, only watching on TV but my boys and I were jumping up and down like crazy people in the living room.

Number 2:
Goody's right foot thunderbolt into the top corner during the 2018 FFA Cup Final. I treated my girlfriend and I to tickets in the Grandstand and we were right behind the trajectory of the ball. Perfectly positioned to "ride' it home into the net. A Cup final, evenly poised, 15 minutes to go, it just felt like a goal like that just had to win it.

Number 1:
Pablo's clincher in the 2016 Grand Final. Just a massive out pouring of emotion by 40 odd thousand people. Amazing noise and Pablo racing straight to red wig Steve and co behind the goal. Personally it was a moment of vindication for the previous 11 years of following a club of dashed hopes, final capitulations and internal implosions. It had all been worth it for that moment.
