2018/19 Round 2 vs Melbourne City

Postby bpowell454 Thu Oct 17, 2019 5:01 pm

The extended teams are in.

Elsey out with a knee injury, strain out suspended.

Troisi and Boland have both been named in the squad.

Our defensive depth is woeful but we have a heap of attacker and midfielder squares pegs to try and jam in there!

Yared Abetew is a defender. I wonder if he'll make his debut? Anyone seen much of him in the NYL or NPL?

My guess:

Izzo
Maria - Marrone - Jakobsen - Kitto
McGree - Boland - Blackwood
Halloran - Toure - Mileusnic

Troisi, Opseth, Konsta or Lia, D’Arrigo, Richards

A starting line up like that would contain 8 players whose primary instinct is to attack.

Michael Marrone speaks to the press before the next round.

Elsey is a big loss.

I assume Maria would play at RB and Marrone moves to CB. The other option would be to start Abetew in the heart of defence.

I hope this will be the starting XI:

Izzo
Maria Marrone Jakobsen Kitto
Boland
McGree Blackwood
Halloran Toure Mileusnic

Richards, Abetew, Lia, Konstand, Troisi, Brook, Opseth

Expecting D'Arrigo to make the bench over Lia or Konstand though.

Elsey being managed for the cup final?

Came in to the season knowing we were light on at the back, didn't take long to feel that.

Wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Eye on the prize.

And yeah, lack of defensive cover - but might mean we give one of the NPL lads a run, according to Bruce.

Verbeek seems willing to throw the young boys in if he thinks they’re ready.

Don't forget we can have 7 on the bench now, might be worth it this week so that we have more options depending on how the game plays out.

Pardon my ignorance on the youth team, but is Abetew a centre back, or a right back who would shift Marrone to CB?

But dont we want to give the local kids an opportunity ?

Abetew set to play tomorrow.
To start? Tough gig to debut with if so, but he has Jakobsen on one side and Marrone on the other which will provide plenty of support.

I see Boland is also out, so I guess D'Arrigo will start unless Verbeek wants Lia to screen Abetew.

Would take a draw now.
City looked decent in their opener and we are very light on already.
