New Coach

Postby mcjules Wed May 08, 2019 11:57 am

I think we can all expect an announcement on Marco's replacement as soon as our season is over and done with (so hopefully May 19 :D ) but Val's just published an article suggesting that it's going to be Gertjan Verbeek

His career is really, really bad.

Sacked by all but one club he has coached at. Constant clashes with players throughout his tenure.

Disaster waiting to happen.

Not sure on that. He coaching record is solid with a 45% winning average over his career. His Wiki page doesn't appear to be have been written/edited by a fan of his, though even still he comes across as a firey individual.

Add to that the fact that at times the scoops from the local media fall somewhat wide of the mark.

I agree

His win loss record is impressive given he has often managed mid to lower tier clubs of a particular league.

He has featured in the eridevisie extensively and some bundesliga experience. Kurz prior to AUFC was predominantly a relegation specialist and only enjoyed short terms.

Based on the little that ive read and a little reading between the lines... he seems like a traditional attack minded dutch manager who favours exciting youth which has been his downfall at some clubs as senior have players rallied against him. Lets not forget even Gombau suffered this during his “revolutions” so it hard to quantify from the reports.

Its well documented by international managers how aussie teams are keen to learn without ego getting in the way that is more common in the higher paid euro leagues, so i think thats worth noting.

In a nut shell, a highly qualified manager with an attack mindset belief in youth development, question marks over his man management but ultimately seems a bit of an entertaining character. Is probably a manager that needs total buy in from the squad.

Another "revolution"
Another change in style.

According to wiki,

Total played: 646 - Won: 284 -Draw: 142 -Lost: 220 -Win % 43.96

This from 2009 ...
Imagine performing so badly that your club, which under no circumstance can afford your severance pay, fires you regardless. Imagine being so popular with the supporters that the board couldn't possibly get rid of you, but does anyway. Imagine that, in spite of your exemplary track record as manager, your players are so fed up with you and your methods – after just seven months – that they refuse to even look you in the eyes, barely follow your instructions and ask the board on three occasions to show you the door.

From 2015 when he joined 1. FC Nürnberg from "Kicker"

translation...
The new coach does not care about systems, "they do not tell me anything". He wanted to get to know the team and their qualities and then let them play attractive. "Of course I have some ideas, but it's always about the qualities of the players, and then you have to be right." His goal is to "stay away from the lower table region". Verbeek is looking forward to the Bundesliga and a young and talented group, but there are also experienced players. "We want to play attractive football and have a face of their own," said the Dutchman.

Verbeek relies on authority, is considered a "tough dog", which is said that he could achieve a lot with little resources - so he would be in Nuremberg at the right address.
The club is his first stop abroad. Most recently, Verbeek had coached AZ Alkmaar for three years in the Dutch division, had become cup winner with the AZ 2013 and had led the club three times in qualifying for the Europa League. On September 29, he was released, which surprised him and he could not understand.

But on the other hand this could be a red herring ...

I agree 7g ! Every 2 years a new era a new revolution, fixing all the wrongs if the past. More like ground hog day.

Im not fussed what style the club employs going forward, I just hope we stick to it with all future managers.

Every 2 year cycle we let a new manager take a knife to what ever style , identity and squad we have built from the last “revolution”. Every second year is written off as a rebuilding phase. What a waste!

IMO its about time we decide how we play and what we value ( tegardless who our manager is) and only hire managers who fit that narrow bandwidth , rather than overhauling the club every 2 years.

Im hoping that Piet is taking a leaf out of PSV’s book and heading down that path where manager conforms to club, not club conforms to manager.

Well he sure does seem firey, that's good.

Can't judge him until we put a team on the park really. Some pretty sizable clubs on his CV

I'm sure there are exceptions but in my mind I seem to think that the better the CV of a new coach to the A-league, the worse they are.

Hopefully he is an exception.

Holman angling for a new gig ...
Recently released from Brisbane Roar, Holman, 35, enjoyed a productive 18 months under the scraggly-haired 56-year-old at AZ Alkmaar in the Eredivisie before joining Aston Villa in the Premier League back in 2012.

Verbeek, who has coached in the Netherlands and Germany, guided AZ to the Dutch Cup the following year, and is viewed by Holman with some reverence.

He is expected to arrive next month, and Holman views him as a galvanising figure - so long as the players buy into his vision.

“I had a great period under him at AZ,” Holman said of Verbeek.

“He’s a well respected coach who will fit the Australian mentality perfectly because he loves hard workers.

Littbarski was probably the exception to that, but in general you're right so far.

Again we can't say too much until we see him in action do start his signings.

I don't know if I'd read too much into his time at Feyenoord. They were a fair basket case when he took over and the Dutch are notorious for infighting amongst themselves. Just look at almost any World Cup..

I'll give him or whoever arrives the benefit of the doubt until we see what they do here. The biggest issue as mentioned is the repeated change of direction of the club every few years. We are constantly tearing the squad apart and rebuilding just as we get an "identity".

Rumour has it that Piet and co. want us to become a development club though in the mould of City and the Mariners, developing youth and selling them off to make our money. As much as I love to see youth thrive at AUFC I hope we can still remain competitive with Victory/Sydney if that is the case.

Ive had a good read about this guy, honestly i think we have much to be hopeful about.

His resume reads very similar to Gombaus really, apart from having more experience.

-Both have an attacking mindset and look to youth

-Both are characters and can be emotional.

-Both require total and long term buy in and have had numerous mutinies on their hands.

Importantly he seems to be piets man, so no one player is likely to orchestrate this managers sacking.

My biggest angst is that AU is now owned by a cartel of agents.
