Looks like Buhagiar is out for Sydney, bad luck for the kid doing a training injury.

Do we know how Goodwin's recovery is going?
I see that Stamatelopoulos scored for the Australian u19s in Singapore last night .. nice. Hope he's back for the game.
All I need is some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.

Anyone catch Strain's goal in the close door friendly? A beauty. Would love to see him playing CM this year but don't think there will be many opportunities, so he bumps 31 y.o Marrone from my side.

---------------------Izzo
Strain Jakobsen Elsey Galloway
-----------Isais ---- Boland
Halloran -----Ilso ------- Goodwin
----------------Diawara

Just 4 locals in my XI :(

That's a nice looking lineup.

Big competition even to get onto the bench: I'd have Margush, Marrone, Stamatelopoulos, Kitto, N Konstandopoulos.
That means Regan, Blackwood, Lia don't even get a look in, let alone the kids (Brook, Niyongabire, Armiento, etc)

I'd be happy with any of those guys getting in the squad, so it's a good problem to have.
All I need is some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.

Can't wait for Friday night.

I'd agree with the first team listed above (and it looks good to me), but the final spot on the bench is difficult.
Margush, Marrone and Kitto are definites, and I'd have Blackwood ahead of Stama.
Then IMO it's a toss up between Konsta, Lia and Regan for the final place (maybe depending on fitness, niggles, training form, mindset).

Decent lineup.

Hopefully Goody starts.

I wanna see Ilso show his worth on Friday. He is the biggest question mark in terms of Visa players IMO. Baba is out of form but we at least know his ceiling is high.

Totally agree re Ilso. So far all I’ve seen from him is bravado and a ponytail. I’m happy to be proven wrong but I see him becoming a frustration for us. Certainly it feels like we still need that creative number 10 unless Ilso improves. Boland, however, has been truly class, equal to Adlung.

I thought Ilso was quite good in the FFA Semi. Got the ball into some decent areas which is something AU hasn't had in a number 10 for a long time. Hopefully that continues and AU have someone who is a chance of creating 10+ assists this season.
IMO as long as Baba's mindset is good goals aren't far away. With Halloran and Goody out side as well as hopefully Ilso feeding him centrally I think he should be in the position to score a fair bit. I hope once he's off the mark we'll start to see a snowball effect.

Ive been watching a lot of youtube videos recently of AUFC during the gombau/Anor era. Its become painfully obvious to me how much we lack some creativity and movement in our mid/ front third.

Obviously there are pros and cons of every style, but i think its important to see our midfield working as a unit and linking with our attackers.

Win or lose im going to be concerned if our mids resort to speculative balls and we rely on grinding out a goal.

It was acceptable last season given injuries and out backs against the wall squad. This season we have an 11 who should be playing football.

I agree our season probably hinges on ilso. I think he looked good in the semi, good with the ball at his feet and great one touch passing while being also being quite direct.

I dont expect to see many rabonas and step overs from him but i think things are looking positive.

I still think Gombau (namely the 2nd half of his first season) was our high-water mark in terms of playing style. What a joy to watch.
Not sure we're on track to replicate it any time soon but so long as the W's come I'll be happy.
On Ilso, I just want him to (a) not bugger off after a couple of months (avoiding a Matmour situation), and (b) not be injured for 3/4 of the season (avoiding an Absolonsen situation).
All I need is some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.

Yeah we wont be replicating that kind of football, but id like to see some kind of plan going forward other than relying on a scrappy goal or speculative shot way outside the box.

Forecast to be blowing a gale tomorrow for the game so long balls are gonna be difficult to pull off.

Squad for tomorrow announced:
Izzo, Richards, Marrone, Regan, Strain, Jakobsen, Elsey, Galloway, Lia, Isaias, Boland, N Konstandopoulos, D'Arrigo, Armiento, Ilso, Baba, Halloran, Goodwin

Notable omissions - Kitto, Blackwood (I assume Stamatelopoulos & Margus not back in time)
Big call ups for D'Arrigo & Armiento, hope they can get a bit of time on the pitch ...

That's an 18 man list. Presumably 3 of them will be cut. D'Arrigo, Armiento and ???
