just watched replay of the 'penalty' incident, and the way the Fox Sports commentators Harper (especially) and Hill make excuses for the ref's call & VAR upholding it is disgraceful.

'can't tell from that angle'...

Referees should never give penalties unless they are 100% sure. It is much better to miss the occasional pen than to give them out incorrectly. Benefit of the doubt should always go to the defenders.
Yeah i dont understand foxsports version.

It was clear from the standard match day camera it did not hit his arm or at absolute worst his shoulder.

So VAR had access to this angle.

To further this they also admitted VAR has its own version of hawkeye where it can zoom in.

So by all accounts VAR had the correct angle on hand and the technology to zoom in.

Buy we havnt even been hard done by guys just ask the media, only the eastern states have copped it.

What is even more worrying is FFA have said they will review the mcging red so he could possibly play next week.

This is ANOTHER breach of the rules! Red cards can only be overturned if clearly no foul has even been committed, it was a yellow card offence and a clear foul there for it cannot be overturned.

Making it up as they go.

One further point,

If lucas believed strain moved his arm to the ball as has been suggested why no card? why did garuccio recieve a card for a similar incident the week before

Lets face it, this season is becoming a total shambles. Any results are virtually meaningless and for me the league has no credibility. Just going to take it on a game by game basis and treat it as a series of friendlies. Less angst that way.

the consistency is the problem. Like shin said, garuccio cops a yellow for handball.....next game its not. Isais cops a yellow for protesting....berisha abuses refs for a minute straight and not even a talking to..... Mvfc waste time blatantly and get away with it....garuccio cops a yellow leading to a red. This is why fans are so angry

The penalty is clearly a referee error, not a video error. IMHO there's nothing 100% clear cut in any of the video, so it would default to referees decision.

Semi-related, IMHO the officials missed a good thing by resisting the proposal for them to wear microphones a few years back. From the experience of other sports I believe their controversial calls would be vindicated most times.

I agree with the last bit, it will give insight and a better level of understanding into the difficulties refs are faced with and the process they go through to officiate.

Any reason why the VAR ref made the decision so quickly? This seemed to be a 15 second decision instead of the 2 or 3 minutes we've seen before. For something like an 88th minute penalty, more care should be taken when analysing the VAR.

I don't blame the VAR for this decision but honestly what is the point of the VAR if it lets a decision like that stand.

Just watched Strebre Delovski on the A-league Hour.

It is hard to fathom the bullshit which came out of his mouth.

Apparently the VAR on a handball will only look at whether it hit the hand/arm or not. It will not look at whether it was deliberate or not. They don't want re-referee the game and change things which are a matter of interpretation. SO KGJ might have looked at the footage and concluded it is not deliberate however it hit the arm so I will not overturn it.

The same sort of thing would have occurred with the Berisha disallowed goal, it hit the arm so it was a mistake so disallow the goal. No consideration of if he time to move his arm out the way, whether he moved his arm towards the ball, just you missed it hit the arm it is handball overturn it.

THIS IS SIMPLY WRONG, IT IS MISAPPLYING THE LAWS OF THE GAME. IT IS MAKING EVERY CONTACT WITH THE ARM A HANDBALL NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCES.

With this kind of philosophy behind VAR it is never going to work with handballs. The VAR must be able to consider whether the on field has made a howler as to whether it was deliberate like Lucas clearly did with Ryan Strain. Whether the ball hit the arm or not is irrelevant, it is clear from the footage Strain only had a tiny amount of time and what he did in that time was try to, I think successfully but it is not 100% clear, get his arm out the way. He did everything he could to avoid the ball hitting his arm.

THAT CAN NEVER EVER BE A HANDBALL, IT IS A HOWLER, IT MUST BE OVERTURNED IF VAR IS GOING TO WORK WITH HANDBALLS

The VAR made two mistakes with handballs, Berisha's was not a howler but still a mistake. However I am not sure we can blame KGJ in the Strain incident, the instructions he is being given by Delovski which probably come from above are just bad.

Apparently the MRP could not sight Bobo because the VAR noted that he had looked at the incident and made a decision so it is considered dealt with during the game. Of course the conclusion of the VAR was it was either a yellow card or red card offence but he was not sure which so Bobo gets nothing as the VAR cannot deal with missed yellow cards. TOTALLY WRONG.

In that case how did they over turn berishas shove of the ref he received a yellow for? Crazy!!

To add to above it seems Delovski's view on the Strain handball is Lucas got it wrong but the VAR got it right.

Surely if the referee clearly gets something wrong and the VAR considers it and does not overturn it then the VAR got it wrong as well.

The first kind of thinking just cannot be right.

Also it came out that the Foxsports offside line is not very accurate so cannot be used be the VAR. I guess Foxsports should stop using it if it does not do its job.
