One year anniversary: your memories?

Postby ChillyPhilly Mon May 01, 2017 4:40 pm

One year ago now, we FINALLY got what we were waiting through years of false hope and suffering for. Exactly as I type this, we were leading 2-1 in the Grand Final.

It was one of the most memorable days of our lives.

But, one year on, what are your favourite individual memories of the day?

I'll give my example. It was the 87th minute. Pablo Sanchez had been unleashed. There was a mistake in the Wanderers' backline, an underhit pass. Sanchez pounced, stealing the ball after forcing the error with his pressure. He took it forwards and few steps and fired. Goal. The sealer.

I turned to my friend to my left and we both bawled our eyes out. We knew what that moment meant: all the years of pain, pissantry, politics, false dawns, chairman resignation demands, narrow losses, fruitless away weekends and so much more, all made obsolete in a flash.

We stayed like this, feeling exactly this, until almost the final whistle.

What a day. Over to you guys. (Apart from us lifting the trophy.) What's your favourite personal memory?

Watching the highlights still gives me tingles.

I went weak at the knees when Pablo slotted that goal. Just an unbelievable feeling.

I think as soon as Pablo had that ball we all knew. That was it. That was the moment you knew we had won the elusive toilet seat. Sure we were already a goal up but they had shown glimpses of danger and we all know that anything can happen in football.

Was just an amazing day all round. Everyone was on song that game, not a poor performer on our side of the park.

Echo everyone's thoughts. One of the proudest moments I've felt as a supporter or playing in any sport.

The elation when Bruce got the first, the stunned amazement when Isa slotted that free kick and the feeling of 'oh no not again, surely not' when Neville smacked it into the top corner.

And the finally, the overwhelming relief and sheer irrational happiness when Pablo found the net.

Still sends shivers down the spine and always will. Moments like those are why we love sport.

I remember we didn't get to the match at a early enough time and couldn't find a seat in the second tier of the southern stand. We wandered around and eventually just settled on a spot near the top of the bottom tier right behind the Red Army. I'd never been super into the red army (though they have improved a lot over the past few years) but I was blown away but how good they were on grand final day. We bought over priced beer and settled in, the noise was great and you couldn't hear a thing from the RBB, just United chants.

We were right behind Isiais when he sent in the second goal and got to watch the free kick perfectly. You could see it was going in from the moment it left his boot. I don't think I've ever seen a more perfect free kick.

It was super tense in the second half after their goal. The place went off when Pablo sent in the third, it was like the pressure valve just got released. I don't think I've ever yelled that much or jumped around that much. It makes me smile just thinking about it.

The whole day made me realise how much I love this sport, this club and this city. it's just beautiful.

100% elation. 100% relief. 100% peace. 100% joy.
How you manage that I have no idea but that's what it was like.

Joy!
Elation!
Eternal relief that we'd won the damn thing.

And Pablo ALWAYS gets his goal!

Most of the game blurs together into one for me.

Some Specific memories:
* Crowd of Adelaide United fans walking from the city to Adelaide Oval
* Standing on the upper balcony behind the members stands seeing the throng of Wanderers fans behind the members area fence like Zombies locked out of a post-apocalyptic city
* First Goal: Seeing the curve on Carrusca's cross (I was sitting almost directly behind it in the upper tier of that stand,) and realising what would happen immediately
* Second Goal: Thinking "What a tame effort" before realising it was actually perfectly placed and already in the back of the net.
* Wanderers Goal: "Well that was out of nowhere"
* Long period of general nerves
* Third Goal: Much like the first, realising it was a goal the moment WSW messed up their pass
* Almost colliding with Travis Dodd leaving the ground after the game
* Angry Wanderers fan shouting at someone else.

Anyone else take a Valium before the game? No? Just me?

Nerves, elation, more nerves, more elation.

100% joy.

I know Allianz Stadium was full in Sydley yesterday, but still they only got 41k to the game. Well short of the 53k little old adelaide got last year.
Losers.
And wasn't that game reflective of the two coaches? Grumpy and Brutal. Some of those boys were lucky to stay on the ground I thought.

Made me remember what a real Grand Final felt like.
Totally agree about the poor quality of the match and the lenient refereeing. But I can guarantee you that if one of those teams had been playing in Red and was named Adelaide United they would have finished the game with 7 men.
Still, as long as Victory don't win I'm happy.
