Preview: ACL - Gamba vs. AUFC
Tue 25 Apr 2017, 07.30PM
A pretty make or break game.
If AU can pick up a draw while Jiangsu can do AU a favour beating Jeju it makes progression far more likely.
Gamba will obviously want to bounce back from their poor result in China last match day.
The biggest issue for AU is how the defence is going to line up.
McGowan and Regan out. I would have thought Amor would have offered Warland some game time against WSW instead of throwing him in the deep end again it seems. I don't see the point of playing McGowan and La Rocca when neither of them are able to play against Gamba. Surely one of those two could have made way for Warland if he's the one the get a call up to the starting XI?
I can't see AU going with a back three as they haven't gone with that all season.
Maybe Isaias as a CB? It would be nice to see Paul Wilson offered a call up but two CBs with no ACL experience is a massive gamble.
My XI
.......................Euge
Marrone..Isaias..Warland..Garuccio
.....................McGree
..............Kim..............O'Doherty
Mileusnic................................Cirio
.......................Baba
Margush
Babalj
Ochieng
Wilson
Makarounas
Kitto
Marino

Wouldn't be against starting Babalj against Gamba, especially away from home.
Hopefully Marrone is at CB with Ochening at RB.
Isa is far too important in the CDM role.

Gamba are still overly reliant on Endo who is a shadow of his former self.

Without recognised CB's it might be worth playing 2 screeners (DM's) and asking the wingers to get fwd.
A point here and we are a strong chance for more on home soil in the final match day.

Without McGree and with Marrone likely to play CB, who would you play at DM next to Isaias?Without recognised CB's it might be worth playing 2 screeners (DM's) and asking the wingers to get fwd.

Maka, mells, odoherty, kim? None of those options are ideal. Where is cam watson when you need him?

That's got to be the worst (as in most inexperienced) defence the club has had all season!Eugene

1 out of the 4 has played there more than once this season!
I'm growing less and less confident by the minute!

I feel like Kim would do a solid job there. I think that could be a good option.Without McGree and with Marrone likely to play CB, who would you play at DM next to Isaias?Without recognised CB's it might be worth playing 2 screeners (DM's) and asking the wingers to get fwd.

Re: Preview: ACL - Gamba vs. AUFC
The way we play means at least one of the two playing ahead of Isaias should be putting in a lot of defensive work anyway. O'Doherty covers an enormous amount of ground when he plays I think he would be the more defensive player rather than Kim. If we do play two screeners then Isaias should be more on Ochieng's side to help him out a bit. There could be an argument to play Warland on that side as well.
Paul Wilson surely will get to sit on the bench but if we need him we are going to be in huge trouble, no disrespect to the lad but it would be a huge surprise if he was not found out at least a little bit by such a big jump in game quality.

Re: Preview: ACL - Gamba vs. AUFC
I was thinking the opposite of O'Doherty. I agree he does cover a great amount of ground but I thought he was maybe too attacking for the potential game plan. For that reason I wondered whether he could be put on the wing and Cirio move to the number 10 role. I felt Cirio's work rate is starting to show as he didn't get back and help out Garuccio as much as Mileusnic did on the other wing when AU played Jeju. The way we play means at least one of the two playing ahead of Isaias should be putting in a lot of defensive work anyway. Although with the amount of forced changes the side is making, maybe another one is too much?

If we are up by 1 you have my permission to go on in the last 5 and run around on the pitch to try to waste some time before getting tackled to the ground by security. Just make sure the ref doesn't check his watch.Throw me on for the final 5
