We won.
We beat a weak team with a very weak defense, although Covic was good. We could not score from many opportunities, the same weakness that is always there. Only one goal against that defense is bad.
And a weak team playing with a winger up front and a couple of decent attacking midfielders tore through the defense numerous times with counter attacks.
There is still massive improvements needed from the team, but at least there was more heart, more run, more creativity, more passion from the players.
The best players were Pablo, Carrusca, Marrone and Galekovic in my view.
And Djite was much, much better.

I am back from aforementioned bar ...... the game was better, particularly from our defence. I thought Elsey looked good and offers us a real option in the centre of defence. Missed Goody though.

Glad to finally get that elusive win. Even though it was against Perf and they are absolutely shite at the moment. It wasnt perfect and its still hard to get a good read on where we're at as the heat played a part in the game and also when you are playing a team that are playing really bad it kinda brings the whole game down a couple of levels.
It felt like the whole team were trying to pass to Bruce so he could break his drought but he still couldn't get his goal. Surely he has to ride the bench for a while. I don't understand why the crowd lifts and get excited as soon as the ball goes near him, even if he is nowhere near goal. He completed a 5 yard pass to Pablo on the halfway line in the first half and people jizzed their pants.

Eugene Galekovic was also back on song.
His excellent positional sense.
Organising his center halves.
Shot stopping and direct distribution.
Welcome back,
O Captain. My captain!

Watched him play CB in seniors for para hills knights when only a young kid and had real presence and vocal. Would not be suprised if we keep him a few more seasons he will be a captain which would be great. A young sa lad as captain of the people's team.Im calling it, Jordan elsey future aufc captain.

Better from Bruce. He got involved and had some shots from positions a striker should be in.
But
The shots were off target and he looked slow and ungainly. Could be the heat? Overall his touch and technique looked below A League level to me. That was his best game in many months and he still looked out of his league. I don't want to be a Bruce Basher, but I feel that the A league has passed him by.
Pablo and Carrusca were gold.
Still not enough in the back of the net from the chances we had, and our defence looks shambolic. The clean sheet is more an indictment of Perths appalling forwards than our rock solid defence.
I will temper all of this with the qualifier that it was hot and trying conditions, a cracking game, and we got a win.
Happy for that win and hoping it provides the confidence to launch the season with Babalj to come back and put pressure on no 9 spot, and La Rocca and Malik to strengthen defence. Pablo and Celo to start every game please.

I still reckon the defence struggles because there's zero midfield pressure.
Any decent forward running freely at a back four is a big challenge for any defender.

Agree with this completely. Tough for the back four when they get no support from those infront of them, and often get left 3v3 or something like that in half a field of spaceI still reckon the defence struggles because there's zero midfield pressure.

Yep. Man for man our defenders did pretty well, but they were exposed a fair bit, a better team would have punished us.
Going forward we were excellent though. Carrusca being on-form makes a massive difference, and Jeggo was involved in absolutely everything. Bruce was good until he ran out of puff too, and despite getting nothing from the ref. We're mixing up our attacks from the wings to going through the centre, which is great to see. Another thing: a couple of times we actually got quick players to break through on a counter attack (Cirio and Kamau), foiled by good goalkeeping or individual errors but I really want to see more of that.
Oh, and 3 points!

I always felt Malik was a gun sitting in front of the back four. When his confidence is up he distributed well and is a great defensive midfielder. However with Isais in the 11 also it's hard.I still reckon the defence struggles because there's zero midfield pressure.

Worth a crack when he is fit again and push Isais higher maybe?

At this stage I don't think Isaias would unseat Chelo or Jeggo in a more forward position. I'm happy with him in that DM position, but his instructions in particular seem to have changed. Under Gombau he would drop right back almost between the centrebacks and be instrumental in working the ball out, now it seems like he gets bypassed a little bit during that phase.

When Malik is back I'd be happy to see Elsey stay at CB and have Malik go ito DM allowing Isaias to play the slightly more forward role he's doing ayway. Osama is a very smart ball player and very good defensively too. Jeggo is neither one thing or another...yet.
Good to see Marrone playing well again. Got caught upfield a little too often again but some great play. He's another that might fill the Jeggo role for effectively.

For me Marrone is still a split-second slow decision wise, tends to dwell on the ball slightly too long and loses passing options.
