Whether its true or not, or whether he will actually come here or not doesn't really matter. It's good PR for the club, quite a harmless positive article that involves our club.

CHEEKY :D

A quick Google gives me:
NEW Adelaide United boss Josep Gombau says an FC Barcelona star has called him and said he wants to join the Reds.

Gombau said the player had telephoned him not long after he was announced as Adelaide's coach for a two-year term on Tuesday.

But Gombau would not reveal the player's name. Nor was he specific as to whether his caller was still on Barca's books.

"But, of course, we have a chance to bring Spanish players to Adelaide.

"A lot of people from Barcelona, I have a good relationship with Barcelona because I worked there for six years.

"But one player that's played many, many games, more than 200 games for Barcelona called me yesterday night.

"He told me `Josep, I want to go to Australia because it's a good opportunity for my family'.

"But now I need to speak to (Adelaide football director) Michael Petrillo about this."

Here we go...
The Advertiser,

"Now there is one player from Barcelona that played for many years and he told me `Josep, I want to come with you to Adelaide'," Gombau said from Hong Kong yesterday.
"He told me `Josep, I want to go to Australia because it's a good opportunity for my family'.

It's promising that Gombau has an outlook of bringing this calibre of player to the squad, but on the other hand it makes you wonder if he can actually make it happen.

If it is possible and probable, it'd be a marquee player and the real question is this;

What sort of money will the Club's current owners be willing to part with for a player of this calibre?

Still not convinced.

As for Valkanis - Well, it is true. Valkanis knows more about Adelaide United than Gombau does. In saying that, I just hope he gives Gombau the absolute truth.

Had a quick look. MOst of them are all old, the only ones I saw that could be a possibility are Xavi, Puyol, Valdes, and Iniesta. Out of them im going for Xavi.

Edit: Saw Dos Sanots's game played, wikis bad ordering fault.

Surely Xavi, Puyol, Valdes, and Iniesta would not be in the equation. The article says he "played" for Barca so surely that means ex-Barca player...

Gombau also says that he is Spanish so that narrows Shane's list slightly.

Ahh fun :)

Xavi, lets face it, no chance :)

Valdes, well Eugene is better :D

Dos Santos doesn't have anywhere near 200+ games for Barca.

Iniesta, yeah again no chance.

Puyol is signed until 2016.

So it has to be a former player and perhaps Josep got his numbers mixed up. My guess would perhaps be Deco. 100+ games, contract with Flumenese finishes at the end of this season.

Deco & Ronaldinho are ex-players with between 100-200 games for Barca. Ronaldinho actually holds dual Brazilian/Spanish citizenship (Deco Brazilian/Poruguese).

Highly unlikely that it would be a player of that sort of standing in the game (same w/ Xavi, Puyol etc) but with del Piero at Sydney I suppose nothing is outside the realms of possibility. Would need the FFA to stump up some marquee dosh big time though.

maybe we could do straight swap with barca. they take eugene (we sacrifice his services for aufc for the betterment of the socceroo's) with valdes. now as eugene is a better player than valdes, barca also throw in one of their up and comers from the youth team for a few years.
