Interesting media "war" playing out at the moment.
In the brown corner Val of the Advertiser: "The evidence couldn’t be clearer as Adelaide United again laboured heavily without a true target man"
In the blue corner of InDaily, Paul Marcuccitti: "History shows that Adelaide United doesn’t need to bring in an expensive striker to turn its season around"

Having read the articles im in vals corner on this one.
Marcucitti references amors season that we do not need an expensive striker and also asks what if the player gets injured?
I feel like thats not understanding the role of a striker correctly. Yes they need to score goals but they also need to present a target and hold the ball under pressure which was something bruce did perfectly and you could weigh it against his lack of goals.
I agree with him that we need to get the ball to the striker first and we currently are not playing though the middle to do that but to me the reason we are playing long balls down the wings is we have no striker currently who can present a target . Its a bit of chicken or egg situation.
I totally disagree we should not sign a striker because they might get injured. Thats football and imo is the completely wrong attitude you need to win major trophies.
I do agree with him however that blackwood is coming back and will offer relief.

Osama Malik - no thanks
James Troisi - never want to see him in a red shirt ever
John Koutroumbis - sign him up- we could do with more defensive depth
Our lads with contracts expiring:
Lachlan Brook - keep
Papa Baba Diawara - release
Scott Galloway - keep with a multi year contract
Kristin Konstandopoulos - no idea
Ken Ilso - release. Replace with a player with an Asian passport if possible.
Vince Lia - keep and have him double up as an assistant
Michael Marrone - keep
Nikola Mileusnic - Jury's out. If he can replicate last season's form than keep. Hopefully he can get his confidence back.
Taylor Regan - keep
Apostolos Stamatelopoulos - keep, lock him up on a multi year deal.

Unfortunately, I think we've seen the best from Mileusnic already, and that we're better off with one of our youth players taking his place.

Re: Who's signed for next season
Personally I am at the point where I have no patience left with Mileusnic at all. It's not like we are talking about an 18 or 19 year old who you could expect to invest time in and grow and improve.
The bloke is 25 years old, going on three years back in the professional system and is still barely able to control the ball at his feet. His decision making and finishing are both atrocious. If he can't get it done by now I can't see it happening.

Mileusnic showed last season that he can in fact cut it at A-league level.

Re: Who's signed for next season
I agree, although I think consistency is something that needs addressing. But I'd place a decent part of that down to injuries. He's made 60 appearances in all comps for AU over his AU career, where if he played every game he would have played 80. Now that's not a massive amount of games to miss the only issue is that he seems to need to build back up to a decent level after time off. So I'd say for every game he's missed he's probably needed at least another game back playing to get back up to HAL standard, sometimes more.Mileusnic showed last season that he can in fact cut it at A-league level.
I think that highlights an aspect of football that is often underrated. Which is the players that can string games together can build up their own form over time and will get the best out of themselves. As we witnessed with Carrusca and Bruce over some seasons when they kept picking up annoying injuries, that slowed their form down and it took time to build that back up, and both players put aspects of their game away till their form and fitness allowed them to successfully display those skills.
One player who for this reason I feel is underrated is Iain Ramsay. I'm not saying he's a superstar but over his three seasons with AU he played 93 matches out of a potential 98 games. IMO looking at his time with Heart/City and now looking at his career since leaving the HAL his time with AU was probably his best. I was always blown away with his work rate especially during the busy time where AU were knocked out of the ACL by Bunyodkor in the quarter finals. I think Ramsay featured in every game over that period for AU.
Another example of this is Watto. Once the club finally found a consistent place for him in midfield he started to string a good amount of quality performances together. Once he lost his place that form dipped significantly.
Time to Djbate!

Re: Who's signed for next season
Imo mileusenic showed last season he is a fantastic athlete who could exploit his talents to create chances.
With that said his awareness and ability to hit the target are well below aleague standard.
I think he is one of those guys stuck between npl and aleague, shoulda coulda woulda been much better if only had x y z skills.

Re: Who's signed for next season
A really out there rumour circulating on Twitter that Fornaroli will be going to Victory in a swap deal for Toivonen.
I'll say it again. It's time to show some genuine ambition. It's Bobo time.
