Its 4days in, keep ya knickers on.
I have to disagree a little with that.

The clubs in this league who are worth their salt usually announce signings prior to the first game of the new year and have their new talent on the bench the following game.

Traditionally aufc never makes a move until febuary when the season has passed us by.

Im not going to be critical of the club though because it would be very hard to sign a quality striker if baba plans to stuck around which means we could only offer them a 6 month deal given baba has one more year.
And this is the thing, if he wants to stay put we have no room to move.
Yeah its a really tough situation and baba has the right to stay if he wants to.

Im not sure we can blame anyone for this predicament.

At the time signing baba for a 3 year deal after his initial good form was a great move ( on paper ) from the previous owners who despite being quite stingy signed the ex la liga and premiera liga striker.

That fact that his body has broken down since is just football and another limitation the salary cap puts on clubs who cannot replace their broken stars despite having the coin.
Baba’s a marquee so you can’t blame the cap or anyone at all. He deserved his contract extension but unfortunately his body has let him down. Hopefully we get an injury replacement who we then can sign on a permanent deal
No, the cap is relevant.

If he stays on we need to fit a striker of a similar resume inside the cap which will be near impossible.

There will not be many players happy with a 6 month injury contract, they will be looking for a multi year deal with security.

If i were baba i would stay on as its likely his last big football contract and he has a family, as a fan i hope we can move him on.
It isn't relevant because we have 3 options.

Option A: We pay out Baba's contract and sign the new striker as a marquee.

Option B: We do some clever accounting and back load the new strikers contract so he's in the cap this season and then upgrade him to a marquee deal for next season.

Option C: If we have another marquee spot available, use it. We only have one confirmed marquee which is Baba. We don't know if the other marquee spot has been taken.

Ilso hasnt yet had the impact we would hope although i think we are judging him as a traditional 10 when that is not the role he plays.

To my eyes he has been playing as a striker next to halloran who drifts into midfield to help create an overload.

Tbh im not sure Kurz’s teams really allow for a traditional 10. Kurz let chelo go despite him being willing to play for minimal money and not take up a visa spot. Instead he signed matmour who played much more as a second striker that drifts into the midfield just as ilso does. So i dont think a true 10 is even on our radar.

Its possibly that ilso has suffered as other players have due to not having a recognised striker up top although i still would have expected to see more from him as this point.

I do feel ilso will be very handy in that role if we can actually field a fit target man every week.

We are a striker away from being competitive for silverware. I actually have confidence in blackwood
Agree with all that. Blackwood in his two appearances looks to have gone up a level. I'm really excited about watching him play.

Elsey linked with a move to Korea along with Ansell and a Roar defender (almost certainly DeVere).

Are any of those options actually realisitc though?
Option A: No, the club isn't going to throw hundreds of thousands of dollars at Baba to get him off their books.
Option B: That's a massive risk from an player's point of view. Would you agree to work somewhere for a fraction of what the market says you should earn in the hope your employer makes it up later? Especially in such a performance driven industry as football.
Option C: Lets just spend more money no one has any evidence that the club has. I've heard previously that Isa is the club's other marquee. I'm not sure if that's the case or not though.

Concerning that there are zero striker rumours whatsoever floating about now. Juric is a no go, Bobo is likely a pipe dream, same with Fornaroli. Are we going to sign a single player this month?

Looking at Transfermarkt, a striker by the name of Hugo Vieira has just left Yokohama F. Marinos (isn't that Ange's club?) and is now a free agent.

Judging by his goal compilations, he's got a powerful shot and plays as a target man, but can also create goals for himself. Definitely worth pursuing. We should also try and look for Aussie strikers playing overseas who might be flying under the radar.

I hope someone from the club is reading this and can put some pressure on Piet and co. to sign a striker, because right now watching this club trying to score a goal is physically painful.

Isa becomes an Aussie tomorrow, that might help speed things up.
