Victory get a loan on a 150 game la liga defensive mid.

Plus they just signed Toivonen, who scored at the world cup and played regular football for Toulouse in Ligue 1 last season.

Also Niedermeier who has not played recently but been around both german top divisions.

Given ffa and foxsports chipped in 2 million for honda to sign to victory should we be asking questions? Victory can clearly afford it, so they have literally made one of the wealthiest clubs even richer while others have no drip feed and restricted by the cap.

This league needs to get back to basics. Surely the salary cap is doing the opposite it was intended to do.

Greg Griffin and Glenn Elliott were both big on getting the FFA to pay us the equivalent to a marquee fund, for marketing. So if they were going to help ADP get here - the rule I heard in 2013 was that the FFA would pay 10% of a marquee player's wage if the player 'added something to the league - then they can help us with some TV commercials, tram billboards, digital campaigns etc.

Fantastic recruitment on paper but yes it highlights how much of a joke the rule is.
Personally I think there is literally few players I would rather realistically see in the HAL. Honda ticks every box I have for what a marquee should bring. But IMO a club funded marquee and an FFA funded marquee are two different things. FFA marquee must not only bring crowds to the home games for that club, but away games too just as ADP did. Honda won't do that.
Personally I'd much rather see the FFA put this money into luring big clubs and nations here to play friendlies. IMO those once off games would probably offer the game more than what Honda is going to bring the HAL. Which IMO is probably going to be a nice highlights package and a CV for Brenton Speed to harp on about for the entire season.
I'd much rather see the FFA look at luring France or Brazil here for a friendly game against the Socceroos. That would get great crowds, great viewership, great sponsorship and offer the squad world class opposition to better themselves against.

Brazil won't come and play a friendly against Adelaide though will they? I'm happy with the FFA marquee fund and the Fox money for marquees too. I just wish that Adelaide had the dollars to take advantage of it. Maybe once the new owners see how the system works they'll be better placed to make it work for us too.

Can't agree with you there mate. If it's a choice between going to Hindmarsh to see United play a Honda led MV, or a meaningless friendly at Adelaide Oval between the Socceroos and Brazil, I know which one I'd rather be at. International friendlies are a bore fest. The big countries rarely bring their full squad and those that do come play a half paced, exhibition game with zero intensity. So certainly no opportunity for the local lads to"better themselves" imo, and the big crowd would be bloated by one game a year types who just rock up to see Brazil.

I agree with Shin to a certain extent. It does seem unfair that the FFA have subsidized the Honda deal and that's allowed them to spend their cash elsewhere. But at the end of the day they are taking full advantage of a fund that's designed to raise the profile of the league, and every club has that option. Does the league need Honda? I think it does. Is it better with him in it? I would say absolutely. Would MV have brought him here without the FFA's help and left themselves with no cash to build a team around him? Perhaps not.

The HAL is certainly going to be a higher standard with Honda playing for sure.
But my point is more, would Honda generate as much interest (as far as luring more people to MV away games) compared to a once off friendly against Brazil? 70k came along in 2007 to see the Socceroos play Messi's Argentina. Would Honda lure 70k extra people over the entire season? Maybe but at least the one off game wouldn't be at the expense of the HAL's credibility.
I see the Honda investment from the FFA as more interesting to a group of people that would otherwise already be engaged by the HAL. Brazil would lure more of the EuroSnobs along that they would generally otherwise not make a great deal of income out of.

Outside of that I'm very excited for the Honda move. I'm a massive advocate for Australia improving their relationships with Asian nations. Which is why I'm such a big ACL fan. Honda should be a boost to that.

Apparently there is going to be a big announcement tomorrow around lunchtime held at Hindmarsh.
No idea what it is going to be about. But I doubt its anything kit related since they unveiled that tonight.

Kobe Bryant is coming to trial with the club?

Today marks the club's 15th birthday, good time for an announcement.
