Has always been a bits and pieces player, hasn't put a full year together for a while.

If you could've asked me the 2 guys you'd want back at the club in an off field sense, these 2 would be it..... closely followed by Cassio and Chelo.

I'm still slightly concerned he doesn't have the worldly knowledge behind him that's needed for such a role but the club has faith and Bruce has a thirst for learning.

18 y.o midfielder Jay Barnett signed from Brisbane Roar by Melbourne Victory.

An SA lad and son of Mike, so disappointed on that front (though I've not seen him play).

One year deal, so maybe home next year.

4 spots remain, 3 of those can be visas.

I'm expecting those 4 will be starting players, hopefully Verbeek gets to choose those otherwise he will have had minimal input into the team.

I think we need-

A striker, a playmaker and a left sided defender.

It all depends on how we are going to line up though. Verbeek favors a 5-3-2 apparently but that could change depending on the league/personnel.

So much for all these players leaving because Kurz went.

Lia is a good signing, however I'd have him as a depth option rather than a starter.

That depends on if any of the youngsters are scholarship players, as you can have up to 6 and they don't take up one of the 23 slots (or count in the cap if you pay the minimum wage, any amount over counts.)

I think Pacifique Niyongabire, Carlo Armiento and Louis D’Arrigo are still scholarship players. I assume Brook's new deal was not.

So we might have 7 spots.

Also if we grab a mature age rookie, they do not count in the 23 or the salary cap

True, I forgot about the scholarship rule. I wonder how long some of these guys can stay on these scholarship deals for though?

Goodwin is hoping for a European offer according to a goal.com article today.

Val tweeting that a player (Not Goodwin) seeking a move to Europe, possibly Italy.

Looking at our list you'd think it's narrowed to Elsey, Strain, Mileusnic, Izzo possibly Halloran.

Of that list I'd think Mileusnic would be most likely to seek a move there and Izzo the most capable.

With any of those guys, or Goodwin I couldn't begrudge them as long as we get a transfer fee.

Im tipping that player is armiento or d’arrigo in serie b.

It seems the most likely, italians love having big squads and loaning players out all over just incase a player turns out half decent.

Although it has been mitigated recently by the banning of dual club ownership of a player

It feels like many players head into Serie B never to be heard of again. Quite different from the Championship or Bundesliga 2.

Happy to see Brook and Vinni staying.

Hopefully Brook gets plenty of mins off the bench while Vinni is seen as a backup and is behind the likes of Nathan K and D'Arrigo in the pecking order.

And then the FFA announced the cap changes on friday :)

https://www.a-league.com.au/news/ffa-an ... nd-hyundai

$137,000 increase to salary cap
$200k cap on Loyalty Player payments and Homegrown Player payments outside of the salary cap have been removed (That is those designated players now don't count any of their wage, before it was only first 200k)
Maximum number of scholarship players increased from six (6) to nine (9).

They loyalty player payments is a big deal as the rule was:
A Club can spend up to a collective $200,000 across any number of Players that have given 5 or more consecutive seasons of service to the Club. A portion of a Loyalty Player’s contract value is excluded from the Salary Cap based on a progressive scale from 25% (5th continuous season) to 50% (10th continuous season onwards)
And homegrown:
Homegrown Players – A Club can spend up to a collective $200,000 on 4 Australian Players aged 23 or younger that have come through the Club’s youth system. Any payments to such Players above the $200,000 allowance are included in the Club’s Salary Cap.
So I assume all the details are the same, except that 200,000 cap on each is just gone.

Looking at the squad we don't have too many for the loyalty one, Marrone and Elsey would both be covered (both hit 5 years in Feb and Jan this year).

Kitto, Izzo and Konstandopolous would of counted if they all didnt have a short spell in another club in between :(

For homegrown we probably have Strain, Margush and Brook.
It does not mention if playing for another a-league youth team disqualifies or another team does. So Konstandopolous might count

But it does show just how important it was to keep youth prospects, not just for club culture, but for future salary cap savings.
