Only team to not have a player sent off in the whole season + finals.
Dylan McGowan, FFA Cup, v Sydney FC 26 August.
Do we count that as the season?

If its not the season, what is it exactly? To not include it as the season labels it "pre-season" which IMO demeans and disrespects the FFA Cup, which everyone was so excited to see introduced.

In professional Australian sport, no team in any code has ever climbed from the foot of the table after eight rounds to be top of the league at the end of regular matches - except Adelaide United

I've been working on some regression analysis of Adelaide's attendances, so I've been compiling data and making spreadsheets, and I thought I'd share some basic attendance stats.

All time average = 11,275
Played 178, won 96, drawn 40, lost 42
Lowest crowd = 2,804, highest = 50,119, median = 10,502

Averages All competitions | Hindmarsh Only | League Only (no finals either)
2005/06 - 11,333 | 11,333 | 10,948
2006/07 - 11,678 | 11,678 | 12,449
2007/08 - 12,637 | 11,604 | 12,697
2008/09 - 12,027 | 11,295 | 11,712
2009/10 - 10,792 | 10,792 | 10,765
2010/11 - 11,682 | 10,872 | 11,552
2011/12 - 8,553 | 8,553 | 9,083
2012/13 - 9,681 | 9,681 | 9,592
2013/14 - 11,078 | 11,078 | 11,078
2014/15 - 11,822 | 10,534 | 12,637
2015/16 - 13,288 | 10,447 | 11,287

Past 4 years (Hindmarsh and league games only) -
Average = 10,572, lowest = 6,205, highest = 16,504
Median = 10,257, standard deviation = 2,354.

Biggest crowd pullers to hindmarsh on average over the past 4 years -
1. Melbourne Victory (14,681)
2. Sydney FC (12,577)
3. Melbourne City (10,907)
4. Newcastle (10,291)
5. Brisbane (10,231)
6. WSW (10,128)
7. Wellington (9,532)
8. Perth (9,508)
9. CCM (8,666)

No worries. If there is any further interest, when I'm done I can upload my spreadsheets or STATA data sets.

But it looks like our crowds have definitely recovered from the Coolen disaster year.

I find it interesting that games against Newcastle have such a consistent attendance. Only 1 game in the past 4 seasons (in 2012/13) has the attendance dipped below 10,000.

Surprised city are above brisbane we always seem to have good crowds to the roar.

The interesting thing would be what might the crowds be if we had a 20k hindmarsh. Would assume the too mv and sfc averages to be higher

Love those stats, always interested in serious stuff like this.

I wonder what the 'turnaway point' of attendance figures is; i.e., what is the reported/speculated attendance in the lead up to a game that will stop non-members from buying at the gate or at an outlet late on game day?

Consider that absolute stadium capacity is 17k. If AU announce that 15k tickets are sold, is this the point at which people wanting to attend but lack a ticket, will decide against going?

Context I guess, we've had some really good attendances against City recently, whereas Brisbane we get good crowds but never 13k+. Small crowds can pull the average too much when you haven't got big crowds to counter it. The result is a lower average against Brisbane. We also had one really bad attendance against Brisbane, I think it was pelting down with rain that day and the game almost got called off.

Yeah that could be interesting.

Yeah I think the same would be for WSW. The club announced the 14k tickets had been sold but the weather was terrible and many didn't show one game.
Sydney's figures are also helped by the ADP games where 15k showed.

I think one thing is clear. A big name will boost attendances decently. Poor weather will hurt figures. But even with a downpour. The club can still often pull an 8k crowd.

If they could just manage to get something like this over the general admission stands

That sheilded fans from the worst of the weather (either baking hot sun or downpours) I think that would level out crowds a bit more reducing the dip in numbers.

Wellington on a rainy Sunday afternoon would likely be our smallest crowd.

Melbourne Victory on a pleasantly warm Friday or Saturday night would be our largest.

Variables at Hindmarsh that definitely affect attendance: weather, timeslot, opponent.
Variables that can affect attendance: football style, form, club issues.

Strangely enough. A shame really as games against Wellington are usually high scoring and entertaining for the casual.

Basically what I have right now, I'm working with weather, timeslot, opponent and form, and possibly the table position the club has going into the match. Not every match report has what the weather was like on the day, so its a bit painstakingly slow to collect all the data; I'm also still figuring out how to input form, whether points from last 6 games or another points based system or categorical (Excellant, good, average, bad form etc).

A club crisis variable could work.
