Adelaide missed out on a new stadium: Frasier

Postby Stuckey Fri Mar 16, 2012 3:15 am

Fraser believes A-League owners would continue to lose millions of dollars because all clubs had financially crippling deals with stadia, saying it's no coincidence that billions of government dollars have been spent for some stadia originally marked for the World Cup.

"The AFL has benefited from the World Cup bid with new stadiums," Fraser said. "Where's one new rectangular stadium?"

Fraser said Adelaide soccer fans had missed a super opportunity to have a bigger-capacity rectangular stadium when it was never included as a serious tenant in the Adelaide Oval redevelopment debate.

Nice to see someone come out and state the bleeding obvious in public!
The stadia included in the bid was IMO more of a joke the the bid video. I still can't believe anyone involved with the bid thought playing most games in stadia unsuited to football would work.

Why is playing on an oval pitch so bad, look at half of the famous stadiums in the world, they are ovals.

Tbh, i dont want a new stadium, hindmarsh is perfect

None of the worlds famous football grounds are ovals.
I agree Hindmarsh is perfect for here and now but we need to consider the future. Games at Adelaide Oval show that AU are able to get closer to 15,000 regularly if we weren't being packed into Hindmarsh. 20 years of AFL at AAMI stadium have proved that unless its the final Adelaidians only ever fill stadiums to 80 - 85%. We need our space.

I doubt WE missed out. Because I doubt they would've built a 40-50,000 seater rectangular stadium for the World Cup, and then afterwards only being used to hold 10-15,000 reds fans. Its not practical when you describe it as simply as that, nor would it sound practical when different groups go in to do public research and studies.

Having said that I would love to have a 18k stadium in the city, roof and that could have the capacity upgradeable.

Pretty sure PSG have a substantial oval stadium

Olympic stadium berlin- 2006 world cup final , think its home to a bunesliga club also

International stadium, 2002 cup final

Estadio river plate - pretty sure hosted a cup final?

I think you would be a game man to tell cassio no famous stadium are oval.

If heard enough things from Archie Fraser for me to just ignore everything he says now.
I remember him saying that the reason AUFC were getting big crowds a couple of seasons ago was because Vidmar had us playing an exciting, attacking brand of football. I wondered if he had actually seen us play at all.

I was just talking about cricket ovals sure there are loads of stadia around the world with Athletics tracks and why the do what they do in Brazil just confuses me!
Most new stadia built for football tournaments are generally football specific. But in the end thats Adelaide's fault for not being interested in rugby at all!
