AU take control of Hindmarsh?

Postby Stuckey Mon Mar 12, 2012 5:09 am

ADELAIDE United is driving a plan to return Hindmarsh Stadium to SA soccer's stakeholders.

United may be on the verge of becoming the only A-League club to operate its own venue just days after contemplating a move to Norwood Oval.

"We have renewed our interest about managing the stadium," said Adelaide United chairman Greg Griffin last night. "We're prepared to involve Football Federation SA in these discussions."

After citing Hindmarsh Stadium is an increasing financial burden, Adelaide is again set to initiate talks with the State Government on running the venue's operations

This is such amazing news! If this happens we will be on such a winner!
Hopefully this does lead to AUFC taking ownership of Hindmarsh but being more in charge of our own finances and future is only ever going to be a good thing!
I would just like to take this moment for all reading this to stop and think about just how far we have come under our owners. Could you imagine 2 years ago we would ever be close to this!

On a side note if the FFSA could come to the table and also have a say in the running of Hindmarsh would be great! I would love to see more FFSA games played at Hindmarsh. How good would it be if every Super League club got one home game at Hindmarsh and all profits from catering went straight to that club. AUFC could start selling Hindmarsh memberships like what AAMI stadium do where members can go to Crows, Port and any SANFL matches.
I would love to see Super league matches played, maybe as a curtain raiser to HAL matches.

Wow! This sounds great. Another step away from the franchise mould and a step towards becoming a club.

I agree with you stuckey, we should definitely try and get FFSA involved. Some of the things you mentioned there sound pretty good.
Adelaide will have to wait another A-League season before it can consider becoming Hindmarsh Stadium's landlords.
But I want it NOW! :P

If they planned things well you could go down to Hindmarsh, watch a W-League, NYL or FFSA run game and then watch the AUFC away match with a beer in hand at the stadium. Better than pumping the money into a random pub.

Chuck a big screen in the eastern grandstand food hall and some chairs and open it to members plus bbq and drinks

If they played it right you could have catering done by a different migrant group each game to raise money for their local organisations (the club making money on beer & softies + a nominal entrance fee for the W-League/NYL/FFSA game). Somali's one weekend, Cambodians a fortnight later etc. It would mean a mini-food festival every fortnight at Hindmarsh with new people being constantly exposed to the game and the club. Sounds an admin headache (you'd need to hire someone full-time during the season just to manage this) however damn good fun.

That is great! Maybe in the caravan area? Then set up and tear down would be easy! God why don't we run the stadium!
Although one thing I would love to see is if AU do ever become Hindmarsh's landlords that area behind the eastern stand would be perfect to set up a club with a bar, restuarant, trophy room, and corporate boxes on top peeking over the eastern stand. If it went right a long the footpath there is loads of room there.

Super idea, a massive step forward for the club.

But... would the government be willing to part ways that easily? Since those rumours about moving away from Hindmarsh were hosed down pretty quickly it seems like they realise AU have nowhere else to go and they could continue to milk us for all we're worth, what's in it for them to palm it off to us?

I think thats the point of the article. AU do have places to go. They could go to The Parade and get a better deal. I believe the ball is in AU's court. AU know that the government have no one else to make them as much money from Hindmarsh so if they walked away as they are threatening to do they would be left with the cost of running Hindmarsh with no one to pay the rent.

One thing I am happy to read is that the government does give us a discount. $50,000 as compared to $100,000 which is what Gold Coast and Perth pay.
