ACL sounds fine....

Postby Stuckey Mon Feb 27, 2012 7:26 pm

Adelaide United's Asian campaign is still on track after the Asian Football Confederation gave the clearest indication yet that the Reds will be allowed to play in the Champions League.

The club's Asian aspirations were thrown into disarray when it emerged that Brazilian fullback Cassio could have been ineligible to play in this month's qualifying play-off win over Indonesia's Persipura Jayapura.

Adelaide won 3-0 at Hindmarsh Stadium to earn the right to play in Group E of the 2012 competition along with Uzbekistan's Bunyodkor, Japan's Gamba Osaka and Korea Republic's Pohang Steelers.

The Reds are scheduled to meet Bunyodkor in Tashkent next week.

With the club in limbo and still not knowing if it will be allowed to compete in another Asian campaign, AFC sources told The World Game “Adelaide should be okay”.

As long as the decision is final. I have a nasty feeling it may come back to bite us if, at a later stage, a more powerful club than Persipura fights this.

I can see no decsion being made and then we just play. March 6th is the first game if we don't hear anything by the 2nd or 3rd we fine. Otherwise its too late and no one can expect Persipura to get sorted by then.

IMO if something was going to happen as far as a Persipura challenge it would have happened by now.

God its getting messy!
INDONESIAN soccer federation authorities hold the key to Adelaide United's AFC Champions League campaign, but only if the club contesting the Reds international eligibility doesn't switch allegiance.

But this is only if the club contesting the Reds' international eligibility doesn't switch allegiance.

Adelaide's case for legitimate Champions League status could get ugly if Persipura wants to become part of the Indonesian football association's (PSSI) competition, given Adelaide may have its 3-0 qualifying win 12 days ago reduced to a loss because of an embarrassing oversight.

I think AFC are using this to try to get Persipura back under their control and will give it as long as possible. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they deliver a verdict against us while the team is in the air on the way to Uzbekistan.

CASSIO'S trip to Tashkent may be cancelled as more confusion surrounding Adelaide United's AFC Champions League campaign continued last night.
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/cri ... 6284519623

The AFC spokesperson said the disciplinary committee met yesterday. But that game against Persipura may count for nothing more than an expensive exercise, costing the club $100,000 to host the clash at Hindmarsh Stadium 13 days ago.
So it seems we're off the hook. The Pursipura match should be written off and Cassio must now miss the Bunyodkor match.
Best we could hope for IMO.

It is sounding as if the AFC want us to go through but have found we are in breach. Hence they may sit on their hands hoping the March 6th appeal will go their way.

Sadly, this approach helps no-one
