Re: Reds in acl?
You would be very disapointed if we could not come very close to winning an afc cup.
I agree though any continental cup the club can enter is a bonus, its not champions league but its more games against more unique opponents giving more players an opportunity... Isnt this what its all about?
I dont think there is any shame playing in an afc cup and i believe winning it gets you automatic qualification into the next acl.

I realise its not great for the club to be losing money, but even if we don't qualify for the ACL I'd take some pleasure in competing in the AFC Cup.
And in all honesty, we'd be in with a shot of winning it...
Current qualified teams
East:
Kitchee (Hong Kong)
Citizen (Hong Kong)
Kelantan (Malaysia)
Terengganu (Malaysia)
VB (Maldives)
Victory (Maldives)
Song Lam Nghe An (Vietnam)
Navibank Saigon (Vietnam)
Arema (Indonesia)
Plus others (inc Thailand)
And the west has teams from some of the usual ACL countries, plus Lebanon, Yemen, Jordan & India.
Some interesting trips there.
Either way, I'm aiming for an away trip.

Re: Reds in acl?
AFC Cup would be awesome for me, a trip to Malaysia and free accomodation with the outlaws to go and watch AUFC play a Malaysian club would be sensational!
Re: Reds in acl?
Wonder how the FFA will work it to get Victory into the ACL
Re: Reds in acl?
Sounds tough to even make it. Tiser this morning said we'd need to win a knockout on Feb 11 to progress to the group stage of qualifying with 4 other teams. Then play 2 games and the top two teams go through. Don't know how that can work - is there something I'm missing?

I think when they say the group stage that is the ACL itself.Sounds tough to even make it. Yeah if we win our qualifying tie then we go into the ACL proper. Lose and we go into the challenge cup or whatever it is.I think when they say the group stage that is the ACL itself.Sounds tough to even make it. Re: Reds in acl?
In spite of our recent injury woes, and out of fear of jinxing the knees of our currently fit players, i vote that the letters A, C and L no longer be strung together in discussions involving Adelaide United lol. How about we just say CL when regarding the Asian Champions League?
Re: Reds in acl?
Why don't we call it by its correct name- AFC Champions League.
haha
haha
Re: Reds in acl?
So looks like we maybe booked in for 11th of Feb.
Ahhh that's my wedding day. I should be able to postpone the wedding.

Re: Reds in acl?
Excellent. Will that mean a home and away leg then I presume? I'd expect us to smash an Indonesian team or similar but don't know the strength of their league tbh. Anyone can fill me in?

Re: Reds in acl?
Its probably less likely we will be up against an indonesian or thai club, those two from what i gather will play off for the right to play against either us, the chinese or the koreans.
Im curious if it will be a random draw of who plays the indo/thais ? Or if the koreans will automatically win that right being from the strongest league?
Thats would leave us to play a chinese club.
Please someone who knows more about the afc cup correct me, but didnt it used to be for specifically developing lower standard leagues? It seems the afc may be trying to strengthen it a little being more like europa then a bit of a charity?

Re: Reds in acl?
Korea 708.5
China 622.5
Australia 570.4
Thailand 520.6
Indonesia 288.7
Well if its based on the points system here are the rankings
So five spots for two teams it really anyones guess as to how there would work it.
Maybe Indonesia and Thailand play off first then they pick the four to play eachother out of a hat?
Or two man sack races on consecutive Sundays till a winner can be found?
