AUFC chasing Griffiths

Postby ganas Thu Dec 23, 2010 11:38 am

Hot on the heels of signing former Feyenoord and West Bromwich winger Andwele Slory as a guest player for 10 matches, Adelaide United coach Rini Coolen is targeting Joel Griffiths as the final piece of his A-League title jigsaw.

Negotiations with the 2008 A-League Golden Boot-cum-Beijing Guoan hot-shot are underway, with the Reds hoping to snare the 31-year-old on a short-term deal until the end of the season, including the finals.

Coolen, whose recent shopping spree also yielded Uruguayan Francisco Usucar, believes Griffiths could be the perfect Christmas present for a club seeking to rein in runaway Brisbane Roar at the top of the A-League.

Griffiths' management received an official offer on Wednesday, but a final fee has yet to be agreed, with Coolen telling The World Game: “Joel is a class player and if there is anyway possible I would like him in my squad for the rest of the season.

"We still have one slot available on our roster but we must wait and see. It is certainly something to think about, that's for sure.

“When players of his level become available you always are interested but nothing has been concluded yet. He’s a good player but I can’t announce anything at the moment.”

“Adelaide are a great club and my friend Travis Dodd has been a big part of the push for me to go there,” Griffiths revealed. “But if nothing happens by January, I will be returning to China for pre-season.

“I’m hoping something happens. I want to play in the A-League again, I want to get some exposure back here and maybe show myself to the fans again and also to Holger Osieck.”

all the griffiths boys confuse me as to who is who.

which griffiths was it we had during ACL? i would LOVE to have him back.

I would assume this griffiths is the loud mouth striker? scored against MV during ACL?

I would find it very hard to cheer this guy on, but we do need some new spark

We had Adam. Joel is the sackwhacker, and Ryan is the one who hasn't played in the A-League.

one thing is clear with the new AU, we are cashed up!! and any players expecting to walk into the 11 based on past happenings will get a shock.

the only position not under pressure right now would be the LB role of cassio and Serg, this can only be good!

I actually don't mind the Sackwhack. Would be happy to have him in the team - he's a bit like N. Burns isn't he, in that he can play as an attacking mid or winger as well as an out and out striker?

Getting slightly long in the tooth but should be good for a few more years.

But, farken, defenders!!

We should be throwing bags of cash at Ognenovski to come back
All I need is some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.

Griffiths + Flores + Van Dijk = can't lose!

The squad definitely needs beefing up, that way it will look even better.

Griffiths + Flores + Van dijk + dodd + leckie + slory = a hell of a lot of competition just to make it on the park!

What!

Are we turning into the Real Madrid of the A-league?

Putting all our eggs in the striker/midfield baskets
Who cares about defence!

We need more defenders!

I would be happy to see Griffiths signed! Not sure about his age though....
Time to Djbate!

seems Rini is off the Maradonna school of coaching, better to win 6-5 than 1-0.

If you look at we have enough defenders, as long as Rini signs this international right back he was talking about. Our problem is our CB keeps getting injured, but we should be able to get an injury replacement for Mullen, so hopefully Rini gets a defender, instead of signing a midfielder as an injury replacement.

If we get Griffiths, the Brisbane game is going to be very interesting. :D :D :D :D :D

And I agree with bringing Ognenovski back, that would make us unstoppable.

Clough, Atkinson, Docherty, Turnbull, Zeman, Galeone, etc??? They must have done something right to attain the reverence they all did.
