Independent A-league

Expansion, second division, now an independent a-league. And by "independent", what we mean is independent of the FFA. But no longer independent of club machinations and agendas.

After years of talking about these difficult issues, sure, let''s just do them all at once. I'm concerned it's all going to come crashing down. There's just not enough money to go around that far and I just don't trust the clubs not to stuff it up.

It will be interesting to see what develops. The existing model isn't working as clubs are losing money hand over fist and the FFA hasn't the management capacity to create solutions. For clubs like Adelaide it isn't too bad, we can hover around the black, but for clubs stuck in inappropriate stadiums the model is a lodestone.

The real issue here is the broadcast money which is likely to collapse before the monetisation of other forms of viewership, particualrly streaming, is better understood. The FFA can see it looming and don't have the answers; hopefully an independent A-League will.

Thats a really good point.

At some stage in the future the aleague will be totally online, the problem is the sports streaming realm is still at its teething stage. There are no clear leaders in the sports realm like we see with netflix and Amazon streaming services.

The greatest potential for success would be for the aleague to produce its own distribution by selling the rights to a season directly to the consumer. I imagine this could be equally dangerous given a lull in the league would result in a direct loss of income with subscriptions taking away any ability to plan for the longterm future.

Gallop is officially gone!
The FFA released a statement on Thursday announcing Gallop has given his notice and agreed to depart on December 31.
Gallop departs the role 12 months ahead of when his contract was due to expire in late 2020.
I don't think he'll be fondly remembered.

Ah yes.
The move from a truly independent FFA administration of the league (independent of the clubs) led by extremely savvy businessmen (with no profit going to them), to a fictionally “independent” administration (independent only of the FFA) led by the owners of the clubs (with their main interests being their own individual clubs and their own pockets (memories of the NSL anyone?).

I am unsurprised, and predicted it to all go to sh!t when everyone was clamouring for the FFA to go.
I may even trawl through my old posts and see if I actually predicted a 5 year horizon. (I may have given them the benefit of the doubt and said 10.)

Helped along by COVID, which was just bad luck, but also by ridiculous decision making.

I hope they can turn it around, because it’s a good product, and the best game in the world.
If not we’ll be back to the bad old days of the NSL and part time football and all the levels of unprofessionalism that would come with that.

Found it. My post from 5 August 2018.

“If FIFA intervene and give the A-league clubs control (which they would use for their individual benefit rather than to benefit the A-league or the national teams or the grass roots), within 5 years I expect to see: problems with the national teams; problems with the PFA; problems with the broadcast rights; reduced funding to grass roots; reduced crowds; and multiple clubs going into administration.

Call me pessimistic, that's just how I see it.“

I certainly didn’t get it all right. So, well done “independent” A-League.

Perth are claiming the APL instructed them to loan a player to MV.

Wtaf.

Completely undermining the integrity of the league.

Can they instruct Amini to join us on loan?

Do MV have a place on the APL board? … Oh, they do.
And Perth? …. No? Oh, that’s unfortunate.
