FFA propose a 3rd marquee

Postby Stuckey Fri Jun 10, 2016 8:42 am

FFA could provide A-League clubs with financial help to sign a third marquee, one with enough commercial weight to boost attendances and ratings.

Interesting. It would be wonderful to see the FFA invest back into the clubs like this.
Its just a bit annoying that yet again they've left it till very late on to make these sort of decisions.

There must be a marquee looming for one of the big clubs who have found their roster full.

It is so City can have Fornaroli, an unannounced marquee they have already signed and Cahill.

Not sure how having Fornaroli and Cahill in the team is going to work. I guess they are going for being a better version of the team last year, score heaps of goals but have a weak defence.

Seems to be a lot of anger directed at Timmy for this new rule. I think the Griffin comments have fuelled that further. Although I don't think any of Greg's comments were negative towards Timmy.
I totally understand Timmy holding out for the best deal.
Hell if the FFA bent the rules to sign me I'd be chucking an extra zero every time we chat.
I just which the FFA were wiling to invest in youth as much as they are in Timmy.

The big issue for me is the 3rd marquee is only at ffa's discretion.

I understand the benefits of such a player to the league but how about the leagues integrity?

Its been mentioned that holman did not qualify for ffa's 3rd marquee rule.
What is the criteria?

Is there any criteria ?

Is it also dependant on how big a club is ?

Would ffa allow cahill to be a 3rd marquee if he chose to play for the nix and not city? Ofcourse not! The league is being designed to reward only the clubs from the 2 big cities in australia.

I would be willing to give this marquee rule a pass if ffa also put a rule through that helps smaller clubs in regard to keeping their own youth players and giving incentives for doing so.

I think the only way I'd be happy with this rule coming into effect is if the FFA only offered it to a new club. Its seems pretty clear Sydney and Melbourne are probably going to get new clubs at some point. Offer this marquee funding to a new club and allow them to kick off in the best possible way. Having someone like Cahill as the poster boy of the new South Sydney club would be a massive boost for them.

Hehe makes me happy!

On a serious note thought this is a hole the ffa have dug for themselves as they have given no criteria to what a standard a guest marquee must be.

I think kuryani is a bigger deal as he is a striker and has a very impressive cv where as diamanti only played for mid and lower tier serie a clubs. No doubt both would be amazing aquisitions in the league though

The criteria isn't public and it leads to these sorts of stories. If I was devising it though, it'd be horses for courses. The bigger the market, the bigger the name required to attract the assistance.

If the criteria is raising crowds, which is surely is part of it, then a big name will raise crowds initially when everyone wants to go and see a player they know. However unless they perform then they are going to stop attracting crowds and they might reduce a teams crowds by the end of the season if their team fails to perform over. A lesser name who performs will capture the imagination, will excited people come along again and again and again. They will come to see brilliance in action, not a disinterested or broken down has been in a team which made the mistake of trying to rely on them and is therefore dropping points.
If I was looking for someone to fund I would be looking for someone who is a clean injury history, who is still playing a high number of minutes, who is still playing at a level close to their best in a top league.
So someone in their early thirties, playing in a mid to lower team in a top 4 league, who started a majority of games, did not have more than one injury would be ideal. They are going to be quite likely to perform near their best even if that best might not have been quite as good as bigger names. Diego Castro meets that description and Diamanti seems to as well.

Presumably if AU have submitted an offer, then the funding is part of it.
But my point is that how many "rule changes" have suited their recruitment over the years? (Kewell, Thompson, Troisi and Rogic). It will be so nice to see this one go against them.
