FFA to appoint professional Hyundai A-League referees

Postby Stuckey Tue Jun 23, 2015 10:07 am

The Hyundai A-League has taken a significant step forward with Football Federation Australia (FFA) today announcing the appointment of three full time professional referees from the start of the 2015/16 Season.

Long over due. Great to hear they've begun this.

Pretty sad though that they've been apparently working on this for three years and all they've come up with is three positions.
But still hopefully its a step in the right direction.

I'm hoping this provides a positive change, but I'm a little sceptical on the level of improvement some ppl are expecting.

Great news for the refs that are getting the pro contracts tho. I know they make mistakes and we criticise them heavily for that, at the end of the day they are human and they have a really tough job. As a supporter of that human element in refereeing, im glad at least now they're getting better compensated for the abuse they cop ahaha.

Chris Beath, Jarred Gillett and Ben Williams are Australia's first full time professional referees.

We all know how everyone feels about old mate Williams but all in all I'm very happy to see this.
I think if the game is to truly progress we need all areas of the HAL to be professional not just the players.

Obviously now they need to set up a Professional Referees Association!

I wonder what the salary is like?

Should we be worried that a football refs salary is better then that of a teacher steering the next generation into adult society ?nthats not really a football question though.

Full time refs is a great step in the leagues evolution. But ffa paying their salaries when ffa already contribute to big clubs signing big marquees among other things is a a worry IMO.

The league needs to become independent from ffa.

IMO the refs play just as important a role in the game as almost any player does. I think they should be on at least the average salary of the HAL.

Well most players have been earning more than teachers for quite a while now...

My point is ben williams is a teacher and good luck to him. Its just sad that in most cases teaching is something to fall back on.

Im all for refs being paid for their contributions but its just a sad reflection on society when teaching is a fall back occupation.
