So as mentioned it seems the Major event levy is strangling any hope for sporting sides in the Gold Coast.

I think the AFL have cottoned on to this and as far as I know they don't have to pay these sort of fees at Carrara due to their investment into that stadium.

I wonder if this is something the FFA could look at and build a stadium for Brisbane and a new Gold Coast side to share? Maybe something in the Southern Brisbane suburbs could be useful for both?

Cr Tate wants the Gold Coast City Council to take control over the venue from the Queensland State Government.
“If we owned that space we would hold more events there and the running costs would be worth it,” he said.
“If it were under our administration the gates would be open to allow people to see world-class football, and it is unfathomable there would be a world champion team here and our people would not get chance to see them.”

Reminds me of how the Dept. of Sport and Rec were running Hindmarsh into the ground and now the AEC have really boosted its viability.

What does the major event levy actually cover?

Its not unusual when any large sports stadium around the world is booked with the intention of filling near capacity that the organisers pay for extra public transport , security etc for games.

I'm not sure if its changed but Gold Coast had to pay a levy when they got more than 5k. Which is why they capped the crowd.

I thought it was capped at 5k so they only needed to open one stand and if they sold more then 10k tickets they needed to pay for extra transport and emergency services, seems reasonable to me.
