I know its not what they were going for when they made their slogan and ads, but when the AFL have their slogan as "Australia's Game" in response to our "World Game", it just seems like a petty attempt to compound that to be a true Australian, this is the game to intergrate with our society.
I might be interpreting that wrong, but that doesn't help the rhetoric that you mentioned Shin, our game is still the game of ethnics, not the game of Australians with different backgrounds.

If tou believe the afl press, they are already multiculural, because one team as a couple of wogs and another has an african kid...

To me thats not multi culturalism, its asimilating other people and cultures to be more like us. But dont get me wrong this is not a bad thing, its just the way the AFL try to paint it is downright annoying.

Where as in the aleague all cultures are respected and represented and there is no need for assimilation as we tend to beleive we are all already aussie just with our own unique family culture.

Im not an afl hater though, i think its a great game that we should hold close to our hearts. Just dont like the ignorance that comes along with it

I had family around during the grandfinal.

" look at the names, barely an aussie name on the park"
In 2015 WTF is an "Australian name" anyway?

I think we get too wound up about the media. Sure, there are segments of it that are virulently anti soccer, but the real reason that our media is wall to wall AFL is because that is what the masses are interested in. Go into any workplace and that's what people follow, casually or otherwise. If there's a tipping competition, it'll be AFL and it'll be well supported, few if any people interested in soccer. There'll be the Euro snobs all wound up about the EPL but they're essentially unaware of any other leagues, particularly the A-league. Hell, go to any NPL club and in the clubrooms, a tele will be on with an AFL match being televised. It's the same in Sydney and Brisbane (relying on my memory of living there in the eighties). There ARE people in the media who are anti the A-league but in Adelaide, the most virulent of them is Val who claims to be a soccer supporter. Some AFL people make a fuss about it but most are merely doing it for form's sake. Hell, we've got Chris Ditmar, an AFL 'face', currently ruining a local NPL club, though with good intentions (and NFI).

The media merely reflects the attitudes of the great unwashed and doesn't have much more power than that, despite what it imagines.

So after the latest adam goodes incident its very interesting to see how its reported.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-05-30/a ... os/6508968

For a start, why is his war dance even an issue in a supposed multi cultural afl league?

Secondly notice the reports of an off field incident between supportor groups ?

If this was weitten about the aleague we could have expect any of these terms to describe the incidents.
-ethnic tension
-hooliganism
-terror
-thugs
-racism
-violence

FFS the article even mentions an eviction however it quickly follows up with " he was happy to go " as if it so how makes it ok.

If this was a HAL game the media would be in overdrive.
The police spokesperson was on the news saying the crowd was "generally well behaved"

Yep, we won't hear our friend Rebecca Wilson write about this one.

:bang:
Just some aussie blokes having a laugh, just like the pitch invasion at the cricket the other night. Everyone laughed as a bloke ran on the field. Do that at an a league game and it is terrorism

As long as those people aren't affecting anyone else's enjoyment I have no problem with people getting on the beers and getting loud. Its just to hypocritical nature of the reporting that gets me.

I agree generally. But I think a lot of these people are just over being slagged off in the media for the last few decades. So it's understandable that they are overly sensitive.

reckon most of our supporters are youngsters getting arked up over tabloid journalism. As for the oldies, many were happy to run a closed shop for a few more decades than served its purpose so it goes both ways.
