Wellington Phoenix

As we all know, the summer of 2014-15 is a big one for Australian football.
This season is the 10th for the A-League, the Western Sydney Wanderers are involved in the ACL final and Australia is hosting the Asian Cup is in January.
This season may also be a defining one for New Zealand football, and in particular the Wellington Phoenix.
After three rounds thus far, they have produced two wins and one loss. However, off the field, there is an elephant in the room that is lurking for the Phoenix.

I'm noticing a few of these articles coming out ATM. Seems to be a bit of an agenda if you ask me.
I would be sad to see the Nix go but IMO they do need to lift their game in a number of areas.
But it is the FFA that negotiate the TV deal in NZ so I can't see what the Nix are blamed for that.

If they do not offer anything to the league and we have an alternative franchise then cut them off imo.

Lets worry about our own countries development and let the kiwis worry about theirs.

I agree, if we have a ready made replacement then let them sort themselves out. I'd much rather see the FFA spend money on another HAL club over handing it to the Nix.

I love having the Phoenix in. Besides, we need to grow the league, not contract it.

I agree. Would be nice in the future to have a second NZ franchise also IMO.

Moar 'derbies'.

Don't think we'll lose them anyway.

what happens to NZ based teams if/when promotion comes in & they finish in the "drop zone"?

By all means keep them, but if they cannot keep themselves above water i dont think they should be bailed out. FFA money is scarce as is , imo it should not also be propping up nz football.

Franchise relocation to Wollongong or another regional centre would be perfect.

However if they can get another club going in NZ and generate a rivalry then even better.

I believe that has been the general approach. Part of the reason that Auckland isn't currently touted as an immediate expansion area is that any bid would need to be self-funding and not have any FFA start-up assistance. That and the 2016 AFC question.

A third Sydney team, based in the Sutherland Shire, could be introduced as early as next year with Wellington Phoenix's future in the A-League up in the air.
As Sydney prepares for the first of three derbies this season, no fewer than nine derbies could light up the football calendar in future years with a team based in the Sutherland Shire looming as a likely to take over Wellington Phoenix's A-League licence.

I do like having a club from NZ. But not at the expense of our relationship with the AFC.
Nix really bring very little to the league so I think it makes sense.

A bit sad that the FFA aren't looking at expansion though.

One thing I don't get is why the FFA leave these massive decisions so late.
Same with the CBA and the visa quota. Surely these decisions need to be made 12 months in advance.

But their broadcast deal is worth one players salary irc. Added costs of teams flying to nz. Being the breeding ground for another countries world cup squads..... We just dont get much out of it.

I feel most for kiwi players who currently make a good living at the nix playing at A-league level. If the Nix fold then they can only play A-league as a visa player and lets be honest that aint gonna happen. Or they go back to being part timers in the local asb premiership in nz.

I could be wrong though, isnt there a working agreement between countries that kiwis can live and work here without visas? Which means the Aleague would also be subject to this.

I think they have to have an Australian passport to count as an Australian.

In the workplace kiwis can live and work is aus generally without a visa.... Insert pfa here.

It would depend on how the AFC view it.
I'm pretty sure they would expect a passport to prove someone is Australia. Although if the FFA fought it as a restriction of trade or something I think they could have a case, but I doubt they would want to rock the boat too much.

I read the full article from the SMH.
Somehow brutal the way the club will be axed with no recourse.

If they can do it to them, they can do it to us.
After all we are really only a License.

Of course they could do it to us but the Fox TV deal demands that there is a franchise in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide so it's highly unlikely.
