A-LEAGUE chief Damien de Bohun says Football Federation Australia is considering expanding the 10 team competition.

De Bohun declared SA is a prospective growth area.

Another A-League club to rival Adelaide United is currently being investigated but expansion won’t happen at least until the current TV broadcast contract is up for renewal in 2017.

My tip is one more in NSW and one more in QLD.

South Sydney/Wollongong seems possible.
I wonder where in QLD the FFA will want to go? My tip is either back up to NQ or if they are still hurting from Gold Coast then give the Sunshine Coast a go as there is a decent population there as well.

I am very much hoping for a return of the Fury (they have done some very good work with the club to keep the dream alive) and agree that Wollongong/South Sydney is the way to go. Canberra has a W-League side though and have been making real efforts to enter the competition so they may well have a more advanced bid than any of the others bar Fury.

There is talk of a 2nd Brisbane side which may make sense at some stage however I think there are other spots in Qld to go to first.

NYL sides established in areas where we have long term potential A-League representation. Clubs can be established around the NYL nucleus (and compete in the NPL as well). This would be good for places such as Darwin, Tasmania, Cairns, Townsville (who tried to enter but were rejected) etc. The tricky bit is proving a club in the NYL can be financially viable however that is for the clubs to determine in their proposals.

Darwin cannot afford an A-League side at this juncture however an NYL side that competed in another competition such as the S.League is a viable option.

Yes, there are a number of issues. The NYL allows for a number of senior positions and the sides would need to be engaged in more than just the NYL to remain viable. The other option is for an NYL represenative side, where the NYL side represents Tassie or the NT and the players return to their NPL clubs at season end.

The quality of these clubs would not be as strong as the A-League affiliated sides however it would provide a development pathway and chance for kids from more regions to shine on a bigger stage.

There must be real concerns about the financial viability of a team there, but the first national league to give the place a team (cricket aside) must be in a good position.

South Melbourne manager Chris Taylor believes taking the step into the A-League is the “logical choice” for his club when the opportunity presents itself.

I agree. A club like SMFC would be great for the HAL. They have the runs on the board and consistently get great crowds at NPL level.
I find his comments about the NPL interesting as well.
