Squad sizes a test of depth; is it time to grow?

Postby Stuckey Fri Jan 17, 2014 12:22 pm

Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory each recorded impressive wins over higher ranked sides in recent days and each side was missing a number of first team regulars through injury, suspension and international duty. Despite that, Loukas Founten asks whether it is time A-League squads be expanded.

Personally I disagree. I like that HAL clubs only have so many older players to chose from and when they aren't available clubs must delve into the NYL squads. The only issue is if they do blood young players on a NYL contract there is a good chance those players could be snapped up by another club for free.
Hopefully this will be solved with the HAL clubs getting local clubs of their own to sign their NYL players and loan them to the HAL clubs in the summer.

It will be tough with a-league , FFA cup and acl for some clubs.

Expand the squad size but ONLY youth league players to fill those positions on a minimum wage outside the cap. Done and everyone benifits

Other clubs should do a Gombau and play youth. There's a whole heaps of extra players right there.

It seems Brisbane have gone to FFA and asked to be exempt from the salary cap to keep berisha.

Farkn joke if this happens!

The squad size is only three under what it is in England I think. What the a-league lacks is a true reserve squad equivalent.

Personally I don't think anything major needs to be changed. Maybe one or two extra slots

I tend to agree with the general sentiment that clubs should be encouraged to delve into their NYL squads (something that the 'Nix are denied).

A bigger bench is more of an issue.
