WSW and Panthers bid

Postby ZANZIBAR Thu Aug 22, 2013 5:57 am

So NRL club Penrith Panthers had a bid rejected for WSW.
What are the motives of a struggling West Sydney NRL club trying to buy a Football club :?

Saw this. Not sure what to make of it.

It's good to see the FFA not sell to the first buyer. Hopefully this is the beginning of many more offers to come.

Penrith wanted to purchase the club as they saw it was a runnaway success. Their plan was to move WSW from Paramatta to Penrith and then use the combined NRL/A-League crowds to lobby for an improved stadium in Penrith as opposed to Paramatta, which is a more likely option given the success of WSW.

It was all about making Penrith NRL a bigger and better club.

The FFA said, "no".

If there were any lingering doubts among football fans as to where David Gallop's loyalties lie, the FFA chief executive's latest move will do wonders for his credentials.

Aligning WSW to an NRL club would be suicide IMO. Every Eels, tigers, bulldog and whatever other clubs are out there fans would probably walk. And that's if the club had good intentions and didn't plan to just run it into the ground!

there are all sorts of information being leaked by FFA about potential bids.

This makes me believe they have a very serious bidder on their hands who they are trying to squeeze more money from

hmm as i log onto FFT, i see that Borussia Dortmund are interested, interesting!

we have been down this path before with Rangers in the NSL. The germans are much better with their money though.

This is correct. You'd think people would have learned from the Carlton/Collingwood follies of the NSL.

Really it's in the interests of both leagues to keep out the rent seekers like the Eminent domain abusers in American sporting leagues though.
