Indigenous Aussies embrace round ball game

Postby Stuckey Wed Dec 12, 2012 9:58 pm

Indigenous Australians have long made a strong contribution to the nation’s rich sporting landscape, but until recently few had made a major impact in football. That is now changing with a host of male and female Aborigines featuring not only in the national league, but also representing the country.

Now Football Federation associations Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The FFA relaunched their indigenous development programme earlier this year under the title ‘Football Dreaming’, with the programme’s annual activities culminating in the National Indigenous Football Festival.

Great news I hope more clubs get behind these intiatives and reap the rewards of local talent.

There has been talk of a NT side joining the SANFL for a while but money has always hindered it. I can't really see the FFA being able to afford it either but it sure would be great!

I grew up in indigenous NT. The skills and pace the local men have playing AFL is phenomenal, perfectly suited to forward play with the round ball.

The problem is substance abuse, which is killing their way of life, let alone sporting ambition.
