Seeing the emergence of the Central Coast play-maker Tommy Rogic in the past calendar year with his blistering domestic form followed by his first selection for the national team in the latest friendly game against South Korea, has raised the question;

“Is futsal the way to go for the development of our youth players between the ages of 6-13?”

With Rogic being the first Australian representative at both futsal and football level for Australia it is a great endorsement for us as a nation to take the next step in developing the technical players, which is an area that we have lacked in, by using futsal training at youth level to help us not only dominate the Asian region but help us make rise up the FIFA rankings.

Current Technical Director Han Berger should incorporate futsal into the pathways message for youth players as the first step before progressing to the outdoor football fields.

All players between the ages of 6-13 need the ball at their feet constantly. That don’t need to learn about tactics until they’ve learned the technical side of the game. The technical side of the game is not only the technique with the ball when they have time and space around them, but with the ball in the tight areas and situations with opposition players surrounding them.

Rogic’s skills are clear for all to see. His development pathway although isn’t for everyone highlights that futsal is a key ingredient in producing attacking talent (something Australia is in dire need of) I hear Melbourne Heart are involved in futsal I hope all HAL clubs soon follow suit in either setting up their own sides, merging with existing ones or best of all involving themselves in the setting up of a futsal league in their home cities.
