Interesting read. Sounds great in theory...
Q:Who benefits from having a big name marquee player? A: Everyone

Q:Who takes all the financial risk of having a marquee? A: The club

And herein lies the problem. Even though everyone wants big names and everyone can benefit, at the end of the day the clubs just are largely are not willing to take the long-term risk for a short-term gain. This is completely understandable and reasonable business sense. Maybe the FFA should chip-in? The problem here is also that the FFA money is for the benefit of football across every level and in every aspect so apportioning large sums into A-league clubs for a player doesn’t make sense. Plus, the FFA would find it hard to recoup any direct return on that investment. So who could help fund the big name marquee? Simple. The broadcaster.
